Well, after listening to some Planxty for a while and really liking the Balkan dance stuff they play, I got to wondering where I could find more of this stuff...is there anyone out there that knows some good groups that play this sort of music? I find the rhythm fascinating. I know it's not Irish, but i figure the Planxty-Balkan connection might get me some answers...
Sinisa Grujoski is the piper you want to hear. A pal of mine visited his ancestral home a few years back in southern Macedonia and picked up two cds by this guy. Absolutely amazing stuff.

Re: Balkan Stuff
Andy Irvine - ex Planxty member - participates these days in a band called Mozaik, they do Irish, American and Eastern European music. Great band.

Re: Balkan Stuff
There's an album by Andy Irvine and Davey Spillane called "Eastwind" that you might find interesting.

To get what I was trying to give a link for, type the following into an Internet search box, and click:
YouTube - Traditional Greek Tsifteteli by Chryssanthi Sahar
It *is* rather fetching. It covers ground that even De Dannan left largely unexplored...

For a taste of high-RPM pumping Bulgarian wedding music - you have the wizard himself - Ivo Papasov

You will likely never complain again that your session mates are playing too fast ;)
