The mandolin being played looks identical to the one I own. That was given to me by a friend, who had it from a relation who said it used to hang on their wall for years.
Does anybody know who made these, or if there were a lot of copies with this design?
I dunno. My bowlback is a suzuki and it doesn't look like that. of course, it's from the mid-to-late 1970s, so the earlier models might be more stripped down than mine. did you try the same question at mandolincafe.com? someone there might know.
Well, it's old, and probably cheap too, from the context of the time.
I don't think you'll get a "Who ?" answer at all, but I would imagine it's european and possibly even pre-(Second World)war. The head design looks much like the german-made mandos that had the more onion-shaped soundboard with pale wood ribs and then a curved back with two or three colours of wood to make various interesting designs ( as opposed to a full bowl-back ). This instrument looks a bit cruder than that. I was even wondering, from what impressions I got of its size, if it might be a mandola rather than a mandolin ?
My suggestion is to browse frequently on ebay - I was looking at banjos the other day and found a similar one to mine, for which I had no maker or anything, but this seller did.
Anyone know who made this mandolin?

And the banjo like mine went for £153 ........I didn't realise mine could be worth that much. Not that I'd sell it.
