Ideas on attaching mics to a concertina

Hi there,

I have recently purchased two ATM350 instrument mics from audio technica to use when I record myself playing ITM, (eventually I would like to produce some CDs but that is still quite a ways down the road). Anyway, I had seen these being used by Ernestine Healy on a comhaltas video and it appears she has attached some kind of mounting bracket or whatever to the sides of her concertina. It doesn't appear to be permanet because she is found playing in a latter video without them, (also on comhaltas). My idea is to set up the mics similar to how she has but I am not sure how would be the best way to do this by just watching the vid. Does anyone have any original, (or not so original), ideas?

The video I am referring to can be found here:

Cheers,
Tyler

Re: Ideas on attaching mics to a concertina

I've seen several people (E. Healy & N. Vallely, off the top of my head) use velcro to attach AT microphones. I don't know if/how they modified the bracket that comes with the mic, but the spring clamp version would take the other half of the velcro nicely.

I just use a ton of electrical tape:

If only it actually worked well...

Gaffer's tape is not duct tape. Don't use duct tape--it'll leave a residue.

Thanks for the ideas. My concertina has Brazilian Rosewood ends so the black tape wouldn't look the best if I played with it in public, still it would work well for recording at my home. I have the spring clamp version and think I will give the velcro a try first. Gzeg, where did you see Nail using this type of mic?

Hmm. I've seen him, with and without, a few times over the years. I won't swear as to the brand of mic, but I do remember him saying that his concertina looked like "a cheeseburger with rear-view mirrors". If you look at his concertina tutor you can see the velcro patches.

Re: Ideas on attaching mics to a concertina

I play in a band with a concertina player who uses velcro strips on hers, they came with the mic's and just had a sticky back but they're easy to take off the concertina. Hope that's helpful!
