Anybody know this jig (and can you flesh out the B part)?
Anybody know this jig (and can you flesh out the B part)?
The following partial jig comes from a wizard at our session who hasn't slowed it down enough for the rest of us to catch it all. We snagged t the first half, but not much of the second, and no name. Can anyone put a name to it, and can you help me out with the rest of the tune? Thanks!

Re: Anybody know this jig (and can you flesh out the B part)?
It's funny you should mention this...
No, I don't know the tune. But I just added a new advanced search in the "Tunes" section which allows you to search by tune fragment. You can type in the first few notes of a tune in ABC format, and see if it matches any of the tunes in The Session.
I hope this feature will be useful for situations like this.
By the way, I already tried the advanced search with the first few notes you've given. No luck, I'm afraid.
Re: Anybody know this jig (and can you flesh out the B part)?
If I ever figure out the B part I'll submit the whole thing, and then we can hold a lottery to pin a name to it. Thanks for the opportunity to run it up the online flagpole....
Re: Anybody know this jig (and can you flesh out the B part)?
Tell you what: if you manage to piece together the second part, submit the tune to The Session. You can call it "Gan Ainm" or "Untitled" at first. Later, when you or somebody else figures out the title, you can go back and add it (whoever submits a tune always has the option of editing the details like name, key, tune type).
Re: Anybody know this jig (and can you flesh out the B part)?
Sounds like a nice tune and seems familiar frommthe first part you have here.. I suggest you ask the player in question to slow down... jigs shouldn't really be played fast anyway.
Re: Anybody know this jig (and can you flesh out the B part)?
Greetings Fergal. We've been working in that direction. Clarity is also a problem, as is getting the tune played the same way twice. These difficulties may be a symptom of the player not fully knowing the tune himself. Which gave me pause in trying to learn it from that particular source...I was hoping someone out there would recognize it and fill in the missing notes with some certainty. As it is, I've tweaked it a bit to fit my sense of where the tune was going, based on twenty years of playing in the tradition (which in my book makes me a neophyte). At any rate, I promise to flesh it out myself sooner than later and will post it in the tunes section.

Re: Anybody know this jig (and can you flesh out the B part)?
This seems to be a tune called "The Strayaway Child". It actually has six parts. It was composed by Michael Gorman and has been recorded by (among others) The Bothy Band on "Out of the Wind Into the Sun" and Kevin Burke on "Sweeney's Dream."
I can't do the abcs yet myself or submit the music but if you type the title in to Yahoo or something similair, there should be lots of references, including the music. Maybe someone else can add it to the site here.
If this is in fact the tune you're after, it's a beautiful tune and well worth learning. Good luck with it. Zhenya
Re: Anybody know this jig (and can you flesh out the B part)?
Zhenya,
Thanks, but I know the Strayaway Child (and will post it now thast you mention it), and I think this jig is something different. Our weekly local session happens tonight, so I'll be sure to iron out the remaining B part, and we'll just call it gan ainm till someone pins a name on it. One of the great benefits of a site like The Session is the opportunity to see so many tunes that the similarities--the family relationships among tunes--begin to become clear. I can see how the Strayaway Child might be related, but it is an altogether different jig.
Thanks again,
Will

Finally worked out the rest of the tune. I'll post it in the tunes section as Gan Ainm for now. Much appreciated if anybody can supply a name.
