ITM in Columbus, Georgia?

ITM in Columbus, Georgia?

Hello all,

I'm moving to Columbus GA (Fort Benning) and I'd like to find a good pub or other venue that might have traditional music now and then. I searched this site for sessions in Georgia and didn't see anything nearby, but perhaps one of you might have some experience with Columbus.

There's a pub called Scruffy Murphy's within stumbling distance of my future apartment, but I don't know if they're going to have songs only or some tunes as well. You know how it is with most Irish bars in America, most people want to hear drinking songs.

And since I haven't posted in a while, an update is in order. I've been playing fiddle for a little over six months now, self-taught so far, and I'm pleased with my progress. I've got about a dozen tunes that I know well (I mess around with classical passages a bit too). I stopped learning new tunes when my technique started plateauing; it's time I worked a little harder on refining the basics before I get ahead of myself. Right now I'd describe my ability as "good enough to impress non-fiddlers, but not competent to play in a session."

Interestingly enough, despite laying off the electric guitar for a while, my lead playing seems to have improved. My left hand fingering is slightly better than before I started the fiddle.

Regards,

Scott

Re: ITM in Columbus, Georgia?

Hey, Scott. I don't think Columbus has a session, but there's a few in Atlanta. You can read more about it at www.atlantairishmusic.com
Also, I live in Auburn, AL which is only about 45 minutes from Fort Benning. You're welcome to come to it anytime. We play on the 2nd and 4th tuesday of each month, starting around 7:30 central time at The Olde Auburn Alehouse. If you join the yahoo group here:

you'll get e-mail reminders when a session is coming up.

Re: ITM in Columbus, Georgia?

Thanks, after I get settled I'll try to check it out. That's not too bad of a drive even for a weekday night.
