Anyone know of any good Celtic viola recordings?

Anyone know of any good Celtic viola recordings?

I'm trying to find some recordings of Irish or Scottish viola fiddling. It is some of the most beautiful music but I can find very few recordings of it. I'm looking for the names of some artists or cd's.
Thanks,
Helen

Re: Anyone know of any good Celtic viola recordings?

There are a couple of tracks on the CD 'Within a Mile of Kilty: Traditional Music from West Leitrim'. I think they're played by Charlie Lennon.

Martin Hayes and Kevin Crawford recorded a single track playing viola and Bflat flute respectively on the album "In Good Company". You can hear a brief sample on www.cduniverse.com.

Re: Anyone know of any good Celtic viola recordings?

Martin Hayes also plays viola on some tracks of "Welcome Here Again"--sorry, don't know which ones, offhand.

Re: Anyone know of any good Celtic viola recordings?

It's actually Maurice Lennon who plays viola on 'Within a Mile of Kilty' - 'The Lark in the Morning' and 'Larry Redican's/The Dairy Maid' - and he uses the same instrument on his father Ben's CD 'The Natural Bridge'. Charlie does play viola on his last solo album.

Máire Breatnach's used the viola on her own solo recordings and several others which she's produced.

I think Brian McNeill has played viola now and then on his recordings with The Battlefield Band, and maybe solo. (If you don't know, this is mainly Scottish music).

Look up also the fiddler Chuck Fleming and albums he's played on with Alistair Anderson - he plays viola at times, I think.

Re: Anyone know of any good Celtic viola recordings?

One of my favorite fiddlers, and viola players is Bonnie Rideout, who plays mostly Scottish tunes, plays a lot of viola on her recordings, sometimes solo, and other times as backup for her fiddle playing. Either way, you can't go wrong listening to her-she is marvelous!

Mairi Campbell plays viola on the beautiful tune "Crossing to Ireland" and Pete Clark plays viola on " The Last Pint of Ale" on the Mackintosh at Murthly CD. It's a reel turned into an air.

Re: Anyone know of any good Celtic viola recordings?

Frankie Gavin does a blistering job of Christmas Eve on the viola on Andy Irvine's album Rainy Sundays. It come out of the song The Longford Weaver, and though I'm sure many might disagree, I'd hardly hesitate to say that it's about the best recording I've heard of that particular tune. If you can find it it's well worth the listen.

Re: Anyone know of any good Celtic viola recordings?

I wonder if there's a chance of someone doing a viola-only album?

Re: Anyone know of any good Celtic viola recordings?

I agree, Frankie Gavin's Christmas Eve on that Andy Irvine record is great viola diddling. He has it easy though, he plays with a shallow bridge and a very very low action. Fine for recording, but he hardly gets any volume or tone out of it.

I play mine set up to get a good tone and it's pretty loud, for a viola. But it's tough playing reels on it, physically I mean. You're knackered after a couple of sets. Then going back to the fiddle feels like you're handling a little toy
