Magana (~) fiddle

Magana (~) fiddle

An old fiddler friend has one. Does anyone have any info about these? I can't read the label as too much dust inside.

Re: Magana (~) fiddle

Pour some dry rice into the body of the violin, shake it around, then top down and with a bit of patience the rice comes out together with the dust. Then try to read again.

Re: Magana (~) fiddle

Never heard of a maker by that name and Google didn't pull anything up.

It looks like Baxter's Violinmaker's Database is no longer freely available, but if you want it badly enough you can purchase a copy here: http://www.violindata.com/vmonline.htm. It's also possible for someone with access to an academic library to get access to Baxter's, if the library has purchased it (it looks like Notre Dame has it, at least).

If you can post pictures of it (including close-ups of belly and scroll) it might be possible to tell something about it.

Re: Magana (~) fiddle

Um, how do you know it's a "Magana" if you can't read the label?

Magana with a tilde over the n would likely be a spanish or portuguese name.

Or could it be a Magini copy?

"Or could it be a Magini copy?"

I think you nailed it.

"Ñ" is a Spanish letter. In Portuguese they write "nh" for the same sound.

Re: Magana (~) fiddle

arghhhh! who let the dogs out ? Wasn't prepared for all the questions . My stupidity is showing. I'm just going by what my old friend said. His wife could have probably told me more about it but she just passed away. If I can get my hands on it again I will try the rice process and see what that reveals. Thanks to all for trying to help.
