Not even Bono is immune to the global financial crisis. What has the world come to? And now where are they going to find something big enough to contain his ego?
Then, he will donate enough of U2's fortune to the state to enable it to honour its guarantees to the seething punters.
This act of philanthropy will make it easy for him to seize power by popular acclaim - conventional politics and economics having obviously failed - and banish the rest of the band to the Blaskets, thereby releasing the rest of U2's billions for an inextricable mixture of state and personal use.
Big ego or not at least Bono is using his fame/money to do work that helps people who are in dire need. Personally, I believe most musicians who dis Bono are jealous. Of what? That he can do what he can do because of being a musician. U2 pulled it off. And I say "good on 'em!"
The big ego idea is really misconstrued. Being famous and egotistical don't always go side by side.. I onced walked by Bono on Grafton street and not being a shy person I said hi, and he stopped to say hi also. Of the stage, he's just a regular guy.
Oh don't give me wrong, I give him full credit for his philanthropic work. It's easy to do when you don't have to sacrifice much to do so, but then again it's more than most people with means do, so it's a big plus in his column. But that's by no means evidence that his ego is small.
And I don't know the guy personally, so it's possible that he's a down-to-earth guy when he's out of the public eye. But from every interview I've seen and read he comes across as having an enormous ego, and I see the U2 tower thing as just begging for ridicule and jokes. But I'll admit I could be wrong about the guy, since I've not met him personally.
Nice one, Bliss, but perhaps you're being a bit kind, I'd be much more critical. Todays playlist is Dave Van Ronk, Elliott Smith, Mazzy Star and Tell Tale Signs by his Bobness, now that's what I call music, eat your heart out bonio, you can only dream of such greatness.
right guys whatever, pffffff! U2 make great music but i think bono's campaigning will not really achieve much, he's not in a position of power, he is ONLY a musician. he is influential, but not powerful enough to change anything. calling him an a r s e hole? well, thats intelligent...
and martin, simon cowell is a legend. people dont like him because he tells the truth, in the trad world our equivilant is seamus tansey, you love him or hate him. but you can't deny the fact that what they say what we all are thinking.
"Apart from that I know little about him apart from the fact that he is a complete ar##hole."
Really? How do you know? It's just a "hit," right? Based on what? Did he tell you to feck of at some point? I don't get it...

Is he still alive? Obviously didn't tell me to feck off then.
I know absolutely nothing about U2 musically. I saw Bono twice on public appearances. He is the only man I know who can make Gay Byrne and David Trimble appear to be lovable characters.
Anyone wearing glasses like that, and talklking as though he was giving the sermon on the mount, must be an ar##hole.
Perhaps thesession.org could arrange a big fund raiser for Bono--maybe a paypal site where we could donate money for his building. Sounds like a worthy cause if ever there was one. I'd hate to see him asking for handouts on the street!
Compared to a lot of other people with his level of assets and recognizability, Bono (and band) do a lot of good. While some of his actions may be driven by ego or financial advancement, there is nothing wrong with that. Last time I checked Ireland still had a capitalist structure, and I defy anyone to be lauded by the press for so long AND have the musical success that U2 have had and not have an ego.
That said, I do believe the Tower is a ridiculous idea, Dublin does not need that. I for one would be glad to never see it completed. They can record in a spare bedroom like I do with a view of my rubbish bins and some mangy dog.
some of the comments on this thread aren't libellous at all. the law states anything that ' lowers the image of a person in the eyes of right thinking people'. although you could argue that some of these people aren't right thinking. lol/.
Libel? You have to prove damages to sue for libel. I don't think that Bono has much to fear from the likes of the mustard board.
You also have to prove that the statements are false...how is Bono going to prove that he isn't an ar@*hole with a big ego? The evidence is against him. Exhibit A: The U2 Tower.
Haha. Tell the truth, U2 and their overblown pretentious pop haven't been on my radar for about 20 years. But I do usually respect bodhran bliss and his opinions, and when I don't exactly respect 'em, I get a good larff out of em. Sharp fella.
I used to argue with a friend of mine who detested Bono that he did more good than Mother Teresa, simply because of his name. Used to drive the mate mad.
But it is all self. A complete and utter ar##hole without any redeeming features.
And if it is true, it is not libel. Wouldn't be too hard to prove he was an ar##hole.
(And do not tell anyone, but you know the way some people are into whips, and leather and such, with me and females it is glasses. Victoria Pendleton is the new love of my life. But do not tell anyone. Wouldn't want them getting the wrong idea)

He is waiting for the Irish banks to fail.
Then, he will donate enough of U2's fortune to the state to enable it to honour its guarantees to the seething punters.

You could argue that Bono became famous because of Live Aid, and he used that situation to feather his own nest.
Apart from that I know little about him apart from the fact that he is a complete ar##hole.

'They can record in a spare bedroom ...'
Well, here's Mr. Hewson's plans for said bedroom (and he's clearly not suffering from any kind of credit crunch):
