I'm, new at this. How do you type out an ABC tune for submission? I have some ABC tunes that were passed out in a class I took from a fiddler from Ireland and want to type them in and share them. I can't find on my computer keyboard the symbols used to separate the measures. Is it simply two capital II's?
If you use all fingers, it's your right hand little finger and a stretch to the last key to the right on the second row down, hit shift first. That row starts, [ shift ] ~ Y U I O P { } |
Do some basic searches first, by name, first measure and variations, and if it is already on site, add your ABCs, with headers, to the 'comments' for the tune. If you are really unsure of yourself you could always run it past one of us, ask for help, and you could even do that here in the discussion you've started, or start a new temporary one. Mostly it's a helpful lot here, despite the tendency to lapse into slag mode occassionally...
On my computer, the bar-line is got by holding down the key with the vertical arrow on it, at the left-hand end, second row away from the user, and pressing the key to the right of it, which carries the symbols \ and | .
Hi Jeremy. Can't add much advice, but definitely don't use letters. My bar line is shift+back slash: \ becomes |. Apparently keyboards vary. I second Gary's offer to help, as well. Nice session last week, eh? --Joe
"ABC tunes that were passed out in a class I took from a fiddler from Ireland" ~ excellent! Don't forget to add the story behind these ABCs when you add them, and any advice that might have come with the teaching would also be most welcome, stories too...
Yes, keyboards, sorry, I remembered after posting the above, with this monitor on the blink, literally, that not one of our keyboards here, laptop or desktop, have the | in the same place. And, in some instances it doesn't show on the key. In Windows you can check your keyboard layout through 'Control Panel' ~ 'Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options'. Even there we have a few different choices here. The markings on the keys and the actual layout don't always agree, so do some experimenting to find yours, and in all our cases you find the '|' with the [ shift ] key down.
See, I told you, some great folks here always willing to help, even to find out if your contribution is already here in some form.
Who was the fiddler? If they gave you a source for their learning the tune, that also adds welcome seasoning to the contributions... I look forward to giving them a go...
Failte!
After typing your abc code check it with an abc player or if you're able to read dots with http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html
Good way to learn a proper abc coding.

If you can't find it on your keyboard you could just copy and paste it in, tedious though.
Its to the left of the z key on mine |
