Hi, I've just moved to Ireland. I've been in Galway city for a week, then I went to Doolin (great place!), and now I'm in Ennis. I'd like to stay in Ireland for some months to practice ITM.
Actually I'm very hesitant... What do you advice? Galway or Ennis? What's the best to focus on music?
(ah, I'm also looking for a job and home...)
...
(ah, if you are in Ennis right now and would like to jam with me and Pere "PJ", let us know).
Corofin is currently blocked both ways by ongoing drainage works and hardly has a session anyway. There's little going on in Ennistymon at the moment.
Seriously, Slainte, what do you think people are going to do in Kilfenora or Lisdoonvarna outside session time? There's nowhere to work and no blooming place to go in this god-awful weather.
I'd say Ennis is a far better bet, but having seen the queues outside the Dole Office there last week, you might stand more chance of getting a job in Galway.
"Floss," I know there's nothing particularly to do in Kilfenora or Lisdoonvarna outside session time, and that's why I love them. Best places to be lazy, occasionally going out for good music. Ennis and Galway are much more exciting, for sure, but sometimes too busy. I had a great time in Galway a few months ago, though.
I think Floss means that if you are looking for somewhere to live on a more long term basis and need to work, Lisdoonvarna and Kilfenora are not ideal since finding a job there would be more challenging than in bigger towns or cities.
Lovely places all, especially when you can make the escape from a rat-race type city.
Outside sessions? You can always drive to Galway! It's not that far.
Dyna specifically mentioned that she was looking for a job and a home and I was just pointing out that, pleasant though the villages around The Burren might be in the summer, come autumn, there are few employment prospects and beggar all to do, expecially when the weather's as bad as it has been recently - far too bad even to go for a walk.
I wish I could make positive suggestions re. a job, but, again, it's one of the worst times of the year.
i feel like starting an argument. danielle 'Co.Clare...the home of music and dance.'
i'm sorry there but if your talking about the home and origins (not that it even matters). where was coleman from? where was morrison from? where was mckenna from? where was tuohey from? people who have made trad music what it is today...and none from clare. get over yourself.
Seamus Ennis, Willie Clancy, Bobby Casey, Micho Russel, John Kelly,Chris Droney, Bobby Gardiner,Tony Macahon,Mary and Andrew MacNamara, PJ and Martin Hayes, Vincent Griffin, Paddy Canny, Liz Crotty, Patrick Kelly,Joe Ryan, Joe Cooley, Junior Creehan, . I could go on but my point is made

Ennis without a doubt. You can get into a session every night of the week.

Re: ITM: Galway or Ennis?
Why not Corofin, Ennistymon, Kilfenora, Lisdoonvarna, or London? But ask the local musicians first. They would direct you to the right places.
