I seem to remember a while ago seeing a cartoon about Irish Music called "Gan Ainm." But now that I look for it, all I can find are dead links. Anyone know what happened to it, or where it is?
Sounds like Gone (as in departed) Anim. This is one of the worst words in the vocabulary of Irish music as it epitomises the laziness of musicians who can't be bothered to find out the name for a tune. Also it condemns tunes (often good ones) to a very uncertain future - can you imagine a conversation between a session group talking about the merits of various "Gan Ainms" they've come across!
Yes, some niggling memory, I think there might have been a cartoon strip wrapped around this prhase, by one of our members from down south, South Africa?
After the Gan Ainm page disappeared, the guy who drew them (Patrick Latimer) used to have one set left on his main site at http://www.patricklatimer.co.za/index.htm
but alas no more....
Oh sure, plenty of material left, for example, from a friend:
"Next one:
Flute and fiddle have tons of notes flying for three panels, then the fourth shows a bodhran player on his back on the floor. 'It's a good set when you wear out the bodhran player.'"

Re: Gan Ainm cartoon
No idea, but this is perhaps a good place to ask what the correct pronunciation of 'Gan Ainm' is.

I had printed out a few before they disappeared. They sit in one of my files of tunes.
