i just joined, and cannot add profile details.
i use firefox, i assume this is a firefox issue.
i only mention this as it may explain why some people are not adding profile info
what does it do when you click on the "Update your description" link? Normally it pops up a CSS popup that allows you to fill in your description text.
This site uses a combination of CSS and AJAX. You might double check to make sure that you have Javascript enabled in Firefox. (Firefox->Preferences->Content->Enable Javascript)
Trying preparing your profile in a text editor such as Notepad, and then cut and paste into your profile. That is what I do with most of my postings. I shouldn't use a word processor for your profile - there's usually too much hidden stuff that could cause problems.
If any FireFox user is concerned about the global enabling of JavaScript as suggested above (which IMHO you all should be), then download the NoScript extension: http://noscript.net/

Reverend seems to have the answer.
I use this sequence in the browser;
Tools > Options . . . > Content > Enable JavaScript
