I am planning a trip to Ireland next year, spring/summer. I will be travelling with an old friend of mine. He does not play tunes or for that sake an instrument, but he is actually able to listen to tunes for up to 10 hours in a row without complaining ;)
Anyways, we want to combine fishing for brown trout with nice sessions and pints in the evening. Anybody out there who will help us finding some nice spots? I know i can find sessions on this website, but can I find people who play tunes and know about fishing for (brown) trout? As this is supposed to be a geat "craic" trip I look forward hearing from you. We are both 50 years old, but mind you, in our minds we are only 25 ;)
There are a few spots in the northwest. Have a look here - http://www.northwestfisheries.ie/fishing/trout/. Lough Arrow, for instance, is in easy reach of Sligo, Boyle and Carrick-on-Shannon, and a beautiful location too.
Then you've also got Lough Corrib, see for example http://www.corribanglers.com/, which isn't too far from sessions in Headford and in reasonable reach of Galway.
I used to fish for trout but have never done so in Ireland. (Oh, I caught a couple of little ones in NI as a boy...)
If you find yourselves on a fly-only stillwater stocked with rainbow trout and they're lying doggo, a bit of sandwich impaled on your fly can work wonders.
I normally combine these activities in and around Galway/Mayo each year, late June early July.
The Corrib system is now sadly hardly worth wetting your line. Loughs Mask and Carra are O.K. and there are plenty of pubs in and around that area for tunes. Last year we went to Spiddle and had a great time. Normally you will find a bit of a session in most towns villages depending on what standard you play at or expect. You will need transport but you will have a good time I can assure you of that. Dont expect to get to bed too early.
If you want a bit more information P.M. me and I will possibly point you in the correct direction.
im no fisherman, but i would have thought hiring a boat on loch derg and stopping off at different villages (eg the famous garrykenneddy ) for music would be an idea.. there is alot of fishing on loch derg, but i wouldnt know what types of fish they get. loch derg is v pretty imho
Not a lot of help for you from a nonfisherman suggesting you go to Lough Derg and someone else suggesting you go to California and Someone drawing a similarity between wild brown trout and fat tailess stocked rainbows. Do not dispair Houlberg. What you wish to do is achieveable and enjoyable even by my standards and I'm only half your(mental) age. As I said before in and around Galway/ Mayo will fill your need. Also it would not be too far to travel to Milltown Malbay for Willy Week if that floats your boat. It all depends when you come and how long you stay . Tight Lines
Ha ha , thanks for all the replies. I will tell you all about the trip next year. The big fish we caught, the sessions with Tommy Peoples, Frankie, Sean Ryan and how I could not keep up with them caused by lack of abbility and heavy alcohol intake ;)
Cheers

houlberg, I can row silentl and dry for many miles (dry, even in the rain!) ; won't speak unless spoken to; and have the fortitude for long portages. I am not stingy with my thermos, and wouldn't complain if you didn't want to share yours. I haven't had a conniption-fit in a small boat in months.
I/we run a small B&B with a wheelchair accessable apartment 250m from the Blackwater River (Salmon, trout and most "course-fish") I'm one of the designated skippers for the wheely-boat, a landing-craft aluminium boat for fishing from. We also have a small sailing boat, Canadian canoe, wind-surf0board (3 sails) and LOADS of other gear like kites, bikes, garden games etc. We run an eco-house and will have the only E.U. Green Flower Flag in Ireland south of Lietrim by Christmas. (For eco-business).
I play/teach fiddle, mandolin, guitar, whistle, concertina and autoharp - in that order of ability. Mosly I play only the first two in public now.
B&B sharing is €35 pps but the price falls €5/night until the 7th which is free. We have a B&B and outside oven we encourage our gueste to use and loads of seating areas in the gardens around the house. I often cook fish for our guests when they catch 'em. Sea fishing and diving is 20mins away.
Some pubs are very music-friendly and in summer there's allways sessions around.
Our house and enviorns can be seen on RTE's "At Your Service" until Nov 6th. Go to RTE and follow link to "at your service" #7 Oct 16th 2008.

Hi Houlberg.
Forgot to mention.
. I'm usually busy in July. I teach English to Spanish students 6 dayz a week - thus I miss Willy Clancy week, - ever year . Boo hoo.
Hope you'll pop by for a few tunes perhaps outside of July. Even if you don't stay with us. Good point though about late hours -sessions only start around 10pm and go on and on......
Anyway the salmon season here doesn't start 'till mid August and at €25 a day it's Reel good. (sorry).
