abc whistle

abc whistle

I know the abc format looks straightforward, but I'm clearly not 'getting it' Not quite sure what the f3 or d2 means;doesn't seem to mean note repeat as I'm trying to figure it out using tunes I know. suggestions very welcome.

Re: abc whistle

There is a header line indicating the default note length, ie:
L: 1/8
d2 means a 'd' twice de default note length.
A tutorial here:

Re: abc whistle

It indicates the length of note. If a single letter (say, D) is the default length, then D2 is twice that length, D3 is three times that length.

This is a different ABC to the common, older, tin whistle ABC.

Re: abc whistle

There are also numerous software tools out there that will manipulate the ABC, by playing it for you in the form of midi audio, or converting it to sheet music for you to read (http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html will do it for you online)

But read through the ABC tutorials, they'll give you a pretty good idea of what all the notation means...

(Not that we want to get into a debate about the merits or drawbacks of written notation of this music :-/)
