I usually buy the pegs and use emery paper to bed them in - no need to pay out good money to an "expert" (but then, I'm a Yorkshireman and our national motto is "Aaoouumooch!!).
Yeah I'm also wondering if I need to seek an expert to put a bridge and three strings on thsi violin I got at an auction, I can do the strings, just worrying if the bridge is a job that needs a proper repairer.
D.J.F. - you guessed it! A bridge just needs a bit of care - if it slips on stage, you end up with very loose strings and a bridge to find. Do you have any friends who might do the restringing for you? Otherwise try a music shop selling string instruments similar to Banks' in York. By the way, unless you're really skint, I'd suggest replacing the remaining string as well (or did you get the full set with the fiddle when you bought it and just need to fit them)
Hi there I'm in London and was a violin restorer for 25 years working for the BBC Philharmonic and Halle orchestras up in Manchester. I now make my living as a street performer but play a lot of sessions in SW London - I still do a few repairs and lots of bow rehairs for London players.
As to pegs to fit em properly you need a cutter and reamer and patience- usually people charge anything from 10 to 20 quid a peg to fit - but they fit and you can tune with the pegs rather than getting em close , jamming them in and the using the fine tuners and bridges make such a difference to the sound , it's always worth getting a decent one fitted by a pro.
if anyone wants their instruments fettling giz a shout.

Re: Fiddle Repairs
PS - I don't get to as many sessions as I would like though, as being an OAP, there are not enough hours in any week!
