Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Thought it might be interesting to suss out what kind of music mustard board members have listened to in the last 24 hrs [an ITM snapshot as it were].
Let's keep it to the last twenty-four [ as opposed to the more general 'what kind of music i like to listen to'] & perhaps to music recordings themselves [not sessions, friends, etc]
You could name a particular tune, or cd, or artist if you like...it might provide an interesting glimpse into the daily listening habits of The Session members....[or maybe not, we'll see].
Oh, I don't want to limit this to ITM either....I know I for one sometimes get sick of listening to trad music...so I put on something else. The other night it was Harold Budd.
so fire away. whatever's been on the old turntable/mp3 player

...the Gershwin piano concerto, since I'm in the bass section for a concert this weekend; and Carles wi' the Breeks on my GHB tutor CD, since I struggle with that, too.

ps. you also might want to add "why"....since half the fun is wondering what motivates people to listen to the people they do at any particular time. thx.

Yesterday from my iPod:
Anais Mitchell live concert recorded in California in Jan. 08 broadcast on Folkscene, KPFA Los Angeles
The Folk Brothers (Jack Hardy & David Massengill) live concert recorded in my house Aug. 08
Today online:
Music in the Glen, ClareFM, Tue. Oct. 7 show
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Mostly myself playing.
When I wasn't playing, music in the background included Blink 182, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beethoven, Bach, Bill Monroe, Battlefield Band, Iz, and Bayside's new cd, Shudder.
Just coincidence that the playlist was so heavy on the Bs.
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
I just bought Troy MacGillivray and Shane Cook's new CD "When Here Meets There" (a mix of Irish, Scottish, Canadian Old-time, Bluegrass, Cape Breton and who knows what other styles) and have been listening to it pretty much nonstop... even when it's not actually playing from my stereo, the tunes keep on going in my head (does that count?) Absolutly amazing stuff.
Woke up to Genticorum's "La Bibournoise" (traditional Quebecois) this morning.

A recording from the Boulder session of the Dick Gossip's/Providence Reel/Lilac (not the CD we made, but a dodgy recording by me at a session in January of 2007)
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Right now I'm listening to Jean Banwarth with Ceol and Djal on Myspace (oops, I just changed to Genticorum). Prior to that was a Youtube of Peter Barnes, John Roberts, Mary Lea, Paul Oorts and Jenny Coxon. Last night was the pleasure of fellow sessioneers. Will be listening to Ged Foley solo tonight in concert and in session after.
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
My Walkman stays on "shuffle", so I can't remember what was playing. It's all Irish, Scottish, and English trad tunes and songs.
The two cds I listened to in the car were Across The Pond (Griffin,Burridge) and Humdinger (Brock,Scahill).
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Another one with the ipod on 'jumble', as Mrs. O calls it:
The last ten:
Madeleine Peyroux: Careless Love
Donny Hathaway: The Ghetto
Tom Waits: Shore Leave
John Prine: Angel From Montgomery
Leonard Cohen: Everybody Knows
Horslips: The Musical Priest
Temptations: My Girl
Iris Dement: Hotter Than Mojave In My Heart
Taj Mahal: Six Days On The Road
Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks: I'm an Old Cowhand
Freakwater: My One Desire
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Handel's oratorio "Hercules" whole of Act III. includes "My breast with tend pity swells" - beautiful - had to stop working, close my eyes and just listen when that came on.
Sodding mp3 player ran out of power on train home tonight though, right in the middle of a Kate Rusby number.
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
I think I've got all those too, Ottery.
Last thing came on my ipod as I arrived home was Peter Sellers with "She Luffs You (Ja Ja JA!)"
Before that was Hullion and I was taken with the tune Miss Clare Chisholm
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Nice list Ottery. Love it. No one's judging-- I hope. I like the Temptation's number myself. And Taj Mahal has always been a favourite of mine since early 80s.
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Been listening to the new CD by James Keane, Daithi Sproule and Randal bays -- Fingal. Also had the Boston College Fiddle Festival CD in last night. Other recent plays include An Bodhran by Colm Murphy, Billy McComisky's new CD and an old Ceili House archive tape I got my hands on recently.
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Bach's Double Violin Concerto in D minor, played by Andrew Manze and Rachel Podger with the Academy of Ancient Music ensemble. Extraordinary playing and musicianship. Played on baroque instruments with gut strings and baroque bows - you can hear the effect baroque bows have on the articulation of the music they were designed to play. They didn't hang around either - I've rarely heard it played so quickly with every note so crisp and clear. Interestingly, you can hear the soloists using the same little ornaments that an Irish fiddler would use.
And the other listening I did was to tracks from one of my favourite Irish Cds - Ben Lennon's "The Natural Bridge ". That and his "Dog Big Dog Little" are, for me, among the few commercial Cds that come close to real session playing - which is why I listen to them a lot.
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
I write TV commercials. Yesterday, I listened to a ton of demos for a :30 kid’s toy spot, maybe 50-75 tracks. A lot of hiphop done on kazoos and toy pianos.
Last night, a lovely session, tried to learn a jig called Alexander’s March—it’s not in the tune database, surely must have another name.
Through this morning I listened to the McCarthy Family Album playing it with Rolling Wave, my iPod set on single repeat.
Then, I’ve spent the rest of the day listening to my selected demo track against a rough animatic of the kiddie commercial. Over and over and over. Yay.
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Bringing It All Back Home by Bob Dylan, Strong In The Sun by Tir na nOg, Seeing Things by Jakob Dylan, Strange Days by The Doors, Poems From Alexandra by Fotheringay and the new Oasis album are the last 6 albums played by myself in the last 24 or so hours. Next up.......hold on....just picking out the next one in the pile....Inside Out by Micheal O'Raghallaigh and then Scribbled In Chalk by Karine Polwart, possibly.
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Kevin Burke - I listened to the re-issued Promenade last night and it sounds amazing. Much better (sound-qualitywise) than the original CD. It almost made me forget the forty contradance tunes I'd listened to earlier which I have to learn for Saturday.
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Karate, I might add that my teacher told me earlier this week that she has the Bach DVC down as the next one on the list for me. She'll be playing one of the parts. I'm very much looking forward to it and expect it to keep me busy for several months.
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
i've been busy this week and only rotating the tune set i'm currently learning, but here is some stuff i had on during the weekend:
"Abbatoir Blues": Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
"Tijuana Moods": Charles Mingus
"An Untamed Sense of Control": Roscoe Holcomb
"Drunk & Nutty: Hillbillies Foolin' With the Blues," Anthol.

-Nancy Kerr & James Fagan - Strands of Gold
-Osin MacDiarmada - Ar an Bhfidil
-Liz Doherty & Fiddlesticks - Racket in the Refectory
-Paul O'Shaughnessy And Paul McGrattan - Within A Mile Of Dublin
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
At the moment I have absolutely no way to play back music in my house, which means that all of the music I hear is music I play. So I've heard some tunes - you don't really want to know which ones, do you? Good - and songs by Townes van Zandt, Utah Phillips, and Andrew Calhoun.
I could really get used to this, come to think of it. This radio only plays songs I like!
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Been listening to music on my tiny 2G iPod. The problem is that it has no screen so I have absolutely no idea what I have been listening to! This is especially infuriating when I come across a tune I want to learn and have to go home and spend hours looking for the tune on iTunes playlist which is saved on my home computer. But the iPod has shuffled the playlist. I know one of the good tracks was from Anna Massie.
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Looking at my iTunes, the last several things I played (all the way through, because that's how it determines what you actually played.... I you played a tune and didn't let it finish, it doesn't log it...) are:
Eoin O'Neill - Corner House
John Carty - DeDannann's (Hornpipes/Reel)
Lunasa - Miller of Drohan
Roger Landes - Unclue Dick's/John McClure's/Flax In Bloom
Siobhan Peoples - Durrow Reel/Plough & the Stars/Millstream
Matt Molloy - Mason's Apron
If you had asked me 10 years ago, it would have included music from Skinny Puppy, Frontline Assembly, KMFDM, New Order, Depeche Mode, Covenant, and ohGr.
20 years ago, maybe Foreigner, Van Halen, Judas Priest, REO Speedwagon, Eddy Money, and Journey...
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Joshua Bell & Edgar Mayer - Short trip home
Jerry Douglas - slide rule
Bob Marley - Survival
Black Grape - It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah
Bjorksbergspolsken - Bjorksbergspolsken
Björk - Vespertine
Arvo Part - Benedek,Tamás(cond.);Hungarian State Opera Orchestra - Fratres
Anto Webern - Quatour Debussy
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Mozart: Piano Concertos #20 & 24
Frankie Gavin, Paul Brock & Charlie Lennon - A Tribute To Joe Cooley
I just went down the list until I got to some diddley
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
I see little point in going "outside the box" these days. This is about as far as I travel away from instrumental trad music, of late: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=IdzwiNh9TJU
That and sean nos singing
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Billy McComisky's new CD
Tony MacMahon and Noel Hill In Nocknagree
The Derek Trucks Band, Songlines - Trucks is my favourite guitarist, he's just brilliant.
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
Spent a lot of time in the kitchen last night with the tunes rollin...
Mike Watt--Contemplating the Engine Room
Bach - Brandenburg concertos 1,2,3,5
Handel - misc. chamber concertos
Chick Corea - an old "best of" compilation
Eric Clapton - live unplugged
Richard Green - Wolves a Howlin
Bizet - Carmen w/Callas
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
This reminds me of a "game" of sorts we used to play as undergrads when were procrastinating on real work. You put your media player of choice on shuffle and list the first ten tracks it plays, regardless of how embarassing they are.
Since our sense of humour usually had the sophistication of Beavis and Butthead, putting the words "in bed" after the title of the track was a source of endless amusement.
For Irish tunes this was hilarious.
The Old Bush ... in bed
Killarney Boys of Pleasure... in bed
Ask my Father... in bed
Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
I have recently listened to:
Rachmaninoff--Variations on a Theme by Paganini;
Gospel music program on a local radio station;
While I was driving to work this morning, I was listening to a local radio station play some songs by Louis Jordan. The last song by Jordan which they played was a blues concerning how women change their minds too often.

I see little point in going "outside the box" these days. This is about as far as I travel away from instrumental trad music, of late: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=IdzwiNh9TJU

Dervish, Dropkick Murphy's and a slew of the most wretched death metal songs my new roommate thinks I'm gonna like. Crap like Slipknot and GWAR. Ugh.

These have been in the car over the last three days and I've been too busy to listen to anything at home:
John Cale - Fear (is a man's best friend);
the utterly wonderful Imelda May - Love Tattoo;
Barry Gray - Thunderbirds (and other Gerry Anderson shows' soundtracks);
Thin White Rope - Squatters' Rights;
Doug Sahm and Band - self-titled;
a live recording of Hatfield and the North;
Etta James - Blues to the Bone;
and,
Miles Davis - The Jack Johnson Sessions.

The Old Bush ... in bed
Killarney Boys of Pleasure... in bed
Ask my Father... in bed
etc.
It just doesn't get old!

Re: Butthole Surfers or Kevin Burke? 'Cuz' Teahan or The Carpenters?
I have recently listened to:
Rachmaninoff--Variations on a Theme by Paganini;
Gospel music program on a local radio station;
While I was driving to work this morning, I was listening to a local radio station play some songs by Louis Jordan. The last song by Jordan which they played was a blues concerning how women change their minds too often.
