I was wondering if I could get a little advice about getting a concertina in my possession. The other day I came across an acordian shop in my wandering. They had quite a few melodians, one and two row acordians as well as the button and piano variety. They also had two new concertinas which I thought was unusual. All the people that I know that play them say concertinas are very hard to come by. I am wondering if anyone knows anything about Hohner (sp?)concertinas, are they any good or best given a wide berth. Would the Hohner be any good for noodling around on before making a commitment to a better instrument.
hohner or staggi concertinas are mass produced, around 20 buttons and are "only" good for finding out if you can get a tune out. If you can, you will outgrow it in weeks, so don't pay much unless you already have a home to sell it on to.
It is always better to befriend a concertina player and watch/have a go/lesson on a decent box. Take them with you to play the box for you.
TIP
Scan Tester had a wierd and wonderful bandoneon (large concertina) which he regularly used to sell to unsuspecting musicians for say, £15, fully knowing it was too complicated for anyone to play. After a month, he always bought it back for £25. He reckoned it was a good investment.
Thanks for the info, the website was very helpful. I see that the concertina thing is a long and potentially (most likely) costly one too. I think i'll stick to the pipes for the time being and wait until I meet a concertina player who'll let me have a shot.
I thought the exchange sounded a bit odd but I figured you were just dislexic in your delivery.
Perhaps you should have to play and memorise all 20 or so parts of the Coolin rather than having a nap whilst playing harvest home, tsk tsk (= cheers, Giles.

Re: Getting a hold of a good Concertina
Surely that means that Scan was losing £10 each time?

Just testing to see if anyone reads this site - of course it was the wrong way around.
Play Harvest Home 10 times as a punishment, Geoff.
