The best car security in the world!

The best car security in the world!

Having parked my car in a quiet residential street on Sunday evening I was shocked and dismayed to get back to it last night to find the car unlocked, the passenger door sitting ajar and the driver's door window smashed in. Fearing the worst I looked into the car to find my car stereo, cds and belongings all still in there, apparently untouched (including the Led Zeppelin)!!

I don't know whether I should be relieved or offended! Is my musical taste so bad that the hardened criminals of the Young Niddrie Team could not bear to pinch them? (To avoid YNT's crack legal team pouncing on me I would like to point out that I have no actual evidence of their involvement - it is merely supposition based on the reports of local residents of trouble in the past. Should a member of YNT wish to come on here to set the record straight then I will stand corrected.)

Anyway it appears that traditional music is not reaching the mainstream of society as has been reported in the past. What do we need to do to reach out to these troubled youths so that they realise that our music is in fact cool and worthy of lifting?

Re: The best car security in the world!

You've not stated where you parked the vehicle but I think it's unfair to specifically blame the people of Niddrie/Craigmillar for this.

Believe me, there are "neds" in every part of Edinburgh... along with lots of decent people too, of course.

Anyway, they'll probably be too busy learning tunes themselves. :-)

Re: The best car security in the world!

I guess it goes without saying that this might be fair Cause for An Alarm.

Anyway, at least you still have your car.

Re: The best car security in the world!

Now I never mentioned the phrase "ned" John, just "troubled youths".

I was parked off Minto Street - and as for the YNT that was just a guess after talking to a resident. I am sure there are plenty of decent folk in Niddrie - just not the members of the YNT! It could have been anyone - that is up to the police to determine. A crow bar was used though so I would doubt it was an intoxicated student!

Re: The best car security in the world!

Obviously the Edinburgh youths haven't the same refined tastes as their counterparts in New York City. As I said to you last night, my truck was broken into when I was living in Manhattan and they took the bloody folk music CDs. Who knew rough New York youths liked the Chieftains and Natalie MacMaster. The Edinburgh guys could learn something from them!

That said, you should keep a banjo or accordion in the backseat. Might keep them away from the car completely. :P

Re: The best car security in the world!

I once had some CDs with the Dubliners on stolen from a bedroom in Glasgow University Union only for the perpetrators to return them the next day! I am surprised they didn't sue for emotional hardship! :-D

I refer you to my reply elsewhere, AC. :-))

"you should keep a banjo or accordion in the backseat"

You might end up with one or two more plus a bodhran , if you're really unlucky! ;-)

Then you could enter it for the Turner Prize.

Re: The best car security in the world!

That's really too bad those were returned, Ali. :) You should have sued them.

Re: The best car security in the world!

In Chicago, when the neighborhoods around our stadiums were really bad in the late 60's and 70's (thanks to yuppies that is now the most desirable real estate in the City) we used to joke that when a kid sitting on the curb asked for ten bucks to 'watch yer car mister", you paid him.

Otherwise you came back and the tires would be missing

I personally think the best alarm is a big dumb dog!

Re: The best car security in the world!

My mother once taught juvenile burglars in an institution (I don't mean how to burgle..). She asked one what was the most effective way of protecting one's house from a burglar. He said, "A dog" - presumably one that was vocal and seemed pro-active enough to be a threat to intruders.

But perhaps not left alone in a car. In the UK, this seems to be the cue for the clouds to part, the freezing rainy weather to vanish and 90 degree sun to come out, cooking the dog to death, whatever time of year this is. The owner is then fed to foxhounds by the RSPCA.

nicholas

you are right. Comment was flip. Herself would have beaten me bloody if she thought I was suggesting leaving her 'baby' alone in a car.

Amazingly though, the pooch does bark at anyone who gets close to the car when it is on the driveway at home.

Re: The best car security in the world!

I had a mate who used the 'big dumb dog' device.

Obviously it wasn't so dumb, or so pleased about being left in the ute all the time. It ate his handbrake, the knobs off the stereo, the steering wheel cover...At first he thought the car had been broken into and trashed (apparently it also bit off the locking knobs for the doors), until he spotted the dog fast asleep on the back seat.

Re: The best car security in the world!

You *had* a mate?
What happened to him, or shouldn't I ask. :-)
