Playing Space

Playing Space

Ever been poked in the eye by a fiddle bow? or been dripped on from the end of a flute?
How much room do you need to play your instrument at a session?
A piper arriving after the session has started can cause a major upheaval.
A hammered dulcimer needs its own legs and can ressemble a small market stall.
For me, the most spatially economical instrument is the concertina, but then I *would* say that, wouldn´t I !
Anybody had any physically challenging moments at sessions?

Re: Playing Space

All the time, man. The publicans don't give us enough space at some sessions, while others are insanely overcrowded "cult" type sessions run by a "celebrity".

Re: Playing Space

It works out pretty well for us...guitar and bodhran generally go knee to knee, and fiddle goes over the regulators and drones...sort of a square kind of arrangement! We fit in a pretty small space.

the tuba now...need lots of room for that...

Re: Playing Space

It's fun when you have a left-handed fiddler in the middle of a row of players. (not me - I'm right-handed)

Re: Playing Space

Yeah, I've played squeezed next to a swinging kitchen door, re-arranging myself mid-flight every 15 seconds as the wait staff charged the door from either side.

And I routinely bump my bowing arm into MaryAngela's fingering arm, and we laugh about our "phone booth" technique.

If I sit in the lee of a flute, I always scoot back just a bit to keep my knees dry. But it's a great place to be for hearing what they're doing.

Doesn't whistle take up the least amount of room? I've been bumped by the hands on a concertina, clocked with the peghead of a guitar, even elbowed by a mandolinist. But other than the occasional shower, I've never had a compalint about sitting next to a whistle.

Oh, I know...the Small Circle sells all manner of stuff, including clothing. Where we play is surrounded by racks of hanging clothing. Every now and again if I'm not paying particular attention and am looking around the circle, I'll end up putting a nice rosin stripe down the front of a shirt or skirt or something...or poke the bow tip into a piece of clothing and end up having it jerked out of my hand, dangling from the whatever it was...

Re: Playing Space

Another similar problem are multi-instrumentalists who insist on bringing their whole collection.
One local brings a mandolin and two mandloa - he plonks his cases down and everyone shouts "Shops open - buy your firewood here".
Of course, I don't take up any space as I balance english and anglo concertina on top of each other so I can play either without taking my piano accordion off. Why do the rest always shout "One man band"?
Or was it banned?

Re: Playing Space

I've got a really nice three quarter length bow I carry round. Handy sometimes
