Yes, that's some fine playing...but for every kid who plays like that, there are thousands that can't, and that doesn't mean they should give it up. I'd bet the same holds true for us on this site. I also think it's unfair to call the playing of a developing player hideous.
But hey, that's just my opinion. All day long I teach kids at all levels to improve their playing, so I try to look on the bright side; I get better results that way.
Yes, yes - You are right Greg - we should be *encouraging* Sarah Palin to be the best flute player that she can be. I mean, poor poor Sarah - I'm sure she'd find the comments very hurtful...poor, young, innocent, little Sarah....
If you listen to the clip it says she had been playing for 10 years at that point. It doesnt matter if she'd been playing for 100 - there is sometimes just no accounting for taste.
God - I swear - you cant say anything on this site without someone losing it and wanting everyone in the world to hold hands and be friends and encourage everyone. I mean - not even about a gun toting crazy woman whos favourite player is James Gal way.
I have to agree here that her embrochure is really weird; the end of the second octave to the beginning of the third octave there is no way you should still be rounding the lips forward. You'd honestly hope that if she had been playing for 10 years at that stage, her flute teacher would have been at her constantly to change it. And didn't teach her that habit to start off with!
I hope she sticks to the flute and doesn't get anywhere near
the White House. She should be encouraged! Great playing
Sarah! Keep it up! Give up your day job - puhlease!
I was learning flute in 6th grade and my flute teacher would have flicked a small cane across my knuckles if I'd persisted with an embouchure that weird. It's no surprise she has no wind power. And I said nothing about the quality of her playing - it's average, middle America high school kid playing. But for a deeper expose of Sarah Palin - well, just about any CNN interview says it all, doesn't it?
Heh. I disagree with Hup. Obviously this is someone who thinks that her winsome flute playing qualifies her to run for public office. Winning a few beauty pageants gives her all the credentials she needs to run the country her way.
The fact that she gives Miss South Carolina answers to Katie Couric's questions and just keeps confidently plowing ahead shows that Palin (a) believes her own publicity, and/or (b) thinks we're too stupid to notice.
Either way, maybe if someone told her that her embouchure is crap, it would shake her confidence and her ego would tumble.
On the other hand, we don't want her resigning just yet. The long she stays with the campaign, the better for Obama.....
Personally, I wish she had used 'field dressing a moose' for her talent. I mean, skinning a muskrat or other 'game' is totally chic for competitions such as this:
But a moose? She would have crushed her fellow beauty queens, & done so covered in blood like 'Carrie.' I agree with bb, someone playing for 10 years should have better judgment that to trot that out as her 'talent,' but as we now know, her judugment is often... questionable? But certainly, even Ron Burgundy plays better flute.
Good point Will! Post-debate we now know her main goal is
to dig up as much of Alaska as possible - really trash the place.
She also has a fantasy of a "victory" in Iraq. Victory over what?
Victory over flute players in Iraq?
Thanks sts for bringing this to my attention. I am circulating this to my pupils as a demonstration of how not to play the flute and to assure them I will never let them play this badly in public!

Hmm, surprisingly little wind power, which is odd, considering how much hot air politicians normally blow around.

For cryin' out loud, gang, she was a kid when that was taped, back in the 80s. I wish my 6th grade flutes played that well.

Re: Flute players might be interested to know...
Erm, Greg, you do realize that Palin was playing flute as her "talent" in a beauty pageant, right?
She doesn't strike me as anyone who needs encouragement. Sometimes the right thing to do is to *discourage* self-aggrandizing behavior....
