I use a Schatten pick up on my tenor banjo. The first time we sound checked it, I had difficulty telling which was the sound coming out of the speakers vs. the banjo itself! It reproduced the sound pretty much identically. I am in the process of switching to a Brekke bridge and new tailpiece for my octave mandolin and will not hesitate to put the zouk pickup on it. I am particularly attracted to the fact that the instrument doesn't have to be altered in any way to accommodate the pick up. If you go with the Schatten, you will need a pre amp. The black box that they sell has worked well for me and runs on phantom power when plugged in with an XLR cable.
about Schatten.....this is interesting because I was hoping to buy a cheaper guitar pedal preamp (eg. the behringer ad121) rather than spending 130 quid on a Fishman...
OK so I bought the Schatten and it sounded a bit piezoy so I paid 25 quid for the Behringer AD121 and it sounds great now...I'm well pleased with it. I've yet to try it out live but will report back when I have.
I've fixed a Schatten Duel Pickup to the head stock of my octave mandola using a heavy elastic band - produced a better sound in my opion than when stuck anywhere on the box and less noise. It's plugged into a 75watt Pevey Keyboard Combo.

Schatten Octave Mandolin/Bouzouki Pick Up
Hi - I'm thinking about getting one of these. Has anybody used one - how good are they?? Do you use with a preamp - if so which one?

I'ld be curious to hear as well. I haven't yet found a reasonably priced and totally acceptable system for bugging my 'zouk.
