I had a quick brainwave. Lots of us are fed up with people submitting their own compositions here, particularly recently. I have done so myself in the past but have stopped now, and besides, my ratio for traditional tunes versus self compositions isn't too bad anyway.
My idea was that whenever we submitted a tune, it should go through a 'moderator filter' so that it is not automatically added to the database. It should fit the following criteria at least (more can suggest other criteria):
1) It is Irish (though allowances can be made for other Celtic countries, up for debate on which ones)
2) It is not self composed and a source is stated if possible
3) The ABC is accurate
It might sound a bit more confined in one sense but I really think that the tunes section is getting out of hand. The 'moderator filter' I propose is only a fancy name. I think it should involve people first emailing their tunes to some "Senior members" (members who've submitted lots of good tunes over the years) and let them run through them to see if their worthy of submission. Just my two cents.
I wouldn't mind all the excess self-composed, non-trad and otherwise, erm, undesirable tunes if we had more search options to help sort through them all, e.g. allowing for key and tune type to be specified when
If no one were allowed to pipe up with their own tunes, we'd have no traditional music, no music at all.
The 5:1 rule works, assuming it's enforced.
A better way to filter original tunes is to suggest that people submit only their own tunes that have won acceptance and are played at their local sessions.
That sounds like a lot of work could probably cause more rows and problems than it is intended to fix. Is it really a significant issue that the tunes database is huge and growing? If it was adversely affecting the speed of the website then maybe it could pose an issue but it doesn't seem particularly bothersome at this moment. There are lots of tunes on this that I will never look at. So what? I'd rather that than having moderators, however lovely they may be, deciding which tunes are valid submissions and which are not. Too sticky.
...when searching by ABC, and having the option to sort by how many people have added the tune to their tunebooks. Sorry, my computer entered my message prematurely.
That might work, Mary. But would you distinguish between a tune penned by me or Dow and one penned by John Carty or Phil Cunninham? (Both are members here.)
Also, it would be unwise to filter based on whether a tune has been commercially recorded or not--some fine trad tunes are still "obscure" by that measure.
Intriguing idea fraught with many dangers....however I can't for the life of me think of what would constitute as
"other Celtic countries"? What say you fellow members?
And what about Canada and the "States"....? i think we should narrow it down in N.America's case to those provinces in Canada's case [this can be achieved thru random DNA testing] that have 70% or better Irish, Scottish or Scandinavian blood. And the same for the U.S of A.
Nova Scotia is, I'm sure, almost entirely Celtic. So it would qualify right off. Same for PEI and Nfld.
I can't speak for Quebec...I guess Breton heritage would count?
Cape Breton is a shoe in right off the old ethnic bat....
I realize there are many problems with this idea. And, also, I've just realized slainte has posted a similar thread just recently, I need to look out for things myself!!
But I'm just trying to get a move on organizing or changing the tunes section, an area which, for me at least, is becoming very dirty and undesirable. It's a case of looking for the gems among the dross. Certain members have done an excellent job in providing solid tunes with every post yet they still get swamped by the crap. I just don't think its a good reflection on that part of the website. I know people who avoid it completely.
PC
sorry, I wasn't slagging you. I think indeed something might be needed, but I don't do "tunes" myself so I really can't speak on the matter. It's just that as you outline it here it seems hard to measure what's 'celtic' and what's not, etc. if you get my drift.
To deal with the authorship problem, I would suggest requiring a source for each tune posted. That could be "Oneill" or "Breathnach", or it could be "Tommy Peoples, the Iron Man" or it could be "session, Biddy McGraw's, Portland, September 2008" or it could be "Learned from Joe Smith, who wrote it". The only unacceptable source would be "I wrote it". That is, new tunes are fine, old tunes are fine. The only thing this board is not for is dumping whatever I happen to write. If I want to see it up here, I have two options. One is to cheat, say I heard it somewhere when actually I made it up. If someone's ego can stand posting it anonymously, fine, they win. The other is to teach the tune to someone and either hope they post it or ask them to.
The moderator's job in that case would be simply to review the source, and block the tune if source=self. That way we don't have people judging whether this or that tune is "really" traditional, which would be a mess.
Cleaning up the tunes area, that's a bigger issue. It is a mess - once upon a time I could search for reels in Dm and get a lot of great tunes and a few losers. I don't think I'd bother today. It's fine if you know a name for a tune, you can get to it easily and there's usually a decent version or better, but looking for new stuff is a waste of time.
How to do it? Couple of options, depending on the culture we want to enact. The most consistent with the site as it's been since the big changeover to mustard yellow way back when would be to allow each user to rate a give tune on a couple of axes - "good" and "traditional", rated on a scale of 0 to 10 mustard seeds (or however many whatevers) would, on average, produce results that would see overall agreement. The Kesh would score high for traditional and low for good, the House of Hammill would score low for traditional (we still know the author's name) but peg the meter for good (in my opinion, natch), and the Earl's Chair would (for me) hover about halfway on both scales, since it really feels like a newer composition to me and I'm not crazy about the tune, but I don't really mind it. Since others might be fanatical about the latter tune, and might know for sure that it was in fact played by both Turlough O'Carolan and Brian Boru, that it was the tune that St. Patrick Himself played after he was done driving out the snakes, the crowd-sourcing approach might give better results than just asking someone, like me, to go through and rate all the tunes, a job that nobody would actually want.
As a side bonus, the number of people who bother to rate a tune could be used as an indicator of how many people have thought about it, which is handy to know. Like the null tunebook ranking, it might give some useful data.
One more thought - certainly a set of check boxes for portions of the tradition wouldn't hurt, so one could search for "reels, Am, Cape Breton" and get only tunes that someon has associated with that area - or "reels, Am, -Cape Breton" if one wanted to avoid that part of the world.
i agree, but i think it should be made easier to actually submit a tune, with a system like sibelius or something, although i think new tunes such as ones by adam sutherland or other acclaimed componists should be allowed
Following on from Jon's thoughts about the authorship problem it seems to me that the best place for an "I wrote it" by a member would be as ABC coding in that member's profile (some members do this anyway). Such a system wouldn't clutter up the tunes database, and would have the further advantage that fewer people would be tempted to use devious methods to get their own tunes onto the database.
I suggested a while back that the "New" part of the Tunes section might have an extra column showing the name of the submitter, same as some other sections do (Events/Sessions/Discussions) so a member familiar with the "names" here can save time trawling through a lot of rubbish and snap up tunes submitted by trusted sources.
I enjoy hearing opinions, on the forum, regarding what each of you likes or does not about all these tunes. For the sake of the future of the tradition I see no good reason for any member to be banned from posting any tune she finds worthy. A tune does not have to be self - penned to be a stinker.
If I were still using dots I believe I would manage through all the mess & stil find the gems. Gems are supposed to be rare.
More dross! Can you really get where you're going without hitting a few bumps & curves?
What I personally would be glad of - if it's feasible without much difficulty - would be a facility for the submitter of a tune to alter the *sheetmusic* (and midi) if he/she's made mistakes in submitting a tune, something I do often enough, and wants to correct them.
I think Jons suggestions would enhance the tune sections immensely.
* Providing a source referene is always useful. "I wrote it" tunes would stand out and would´nt necessarily have to be banned.
* Allowing the community tor rate tunes would be helpful for all of us all to focus on the tunes that attract others.
Members should of course only be allowed to rate tunes once, so I guess this this functionality would have to be built into the site.
What are the chances of that, Jeremy?
If Jeremy is not in the modus for changes then it could also be solved outside this site as a standalone "rating machine". Anyone feel the urge and capacity?
I say ban all tunes that don't appear in a reference before O'Neills. Sweep away this newfangled crud entirely! Why give anyone the capability to load any new tunes? One unchanging tunebook, handed down on stone tablets, whose holy faith let us now declare, as it was in the beginning, it now and ever shall be, unchanging and without end, amen!!!
This site is not a co-operative. Its Jeremy's own baby and he's kind enough to allow us to visit and play with his baby.
There are reasons why some things are difficult to change and if anyone wants to do something about the new tune submissions then start a site for that and post the link here. I think that has been tried before but not sure where it ended up.
If you have any great ideas about what could be done to improve the site, I think it might be more appropriate to direct mail Jeremy.
Every change tends to have flow-on effects that of itself may turn out to be just as undesirable as the problem that it was designed to solve.
The site works well enough as it is IMHO.
Not many people have responded to this thread. I'm betting that's because others - like me - agree with you, Donough. Leave it alone. It works as it is.

Its fine as it is, yes. Its not a big problem. Just me moaning after a long day in work. Some things get up my wits and one of them is people posting their own tunes when they've little or nothing in the area of traditional tunes (or tunes they didn't write themselves.)

By analysing opinions of tunes you could classify other members once and for all on a scale from utter g0bsh!te to relatively sane. Then there would be a basis for setting up a filter that would enable members to display only the contributions to discussions from the level of sanity with which they can deal. Wonderful!! ; - )
Hmmmm.....peer review, like in science publications ?
But this isn't a science here, as we all know.
There is a longer and slower filter, as we all know, which is time. In the end, sh1t does not get played or remembered, it just sits in the files digitally non-degrading.
These days there is no reliable way to attribute a newish tune to any country, celtic or not. Take Farewell to Chernobyl for example. Written by a Frenchman, played all over the place.
That's not what I had in mind.
Oral tradition unsually works in such a way that only tunes which have a certain quality will survive. So it is pointless to fix it's origin because it does not really matter. It will survive if it's good.
We have to face that fact that "Irish" music is played by people all over the world and thus any geographical restrictions are doomed to fail. Quality standards are a matter of personal choice.
Compare it to Google: it can lead you to a lot of nonsense but you also find some good results.
In short: I see no other way to run the tune database.
"I would be interested in knowing if any of these original tunes are good."
You could always try listening to them!
But you raise a very interesting point; what *makes* a good tune a good tune? Also, where exactly *would* you expect to find good original tunes? Do all great tunes necessarily need to be have written by great players?
PaddyC said that members are posting their original tunes. Out of those what have we got? In particular an ayone point me toward just 1 they consider a keeper. I suppose I could begin by listening to the MIDI; or YouTube of tunes submitted by PaddyCMusic(?)
BTW ~ a great tune isn't necessarily composed by a great player. Merely a pkayer with a good ear; or 2.
Thanks Bob I will use my imagination. The link to Mighty Craic is no longer working so I have the MIDI. Midi - schmidi; but I believe there is a tune in there.
Cheers!
