I apologise if this has already been announced here. This is a charity event organised by musicians from Northumberland. The idea is for as many bands as possible to put on ceili(dh)s simultaneously on 18th October of this year. At 10.00pm precisely, the dancers will dance a Circassian Circle http://www.mts.net/~jinks%20/fd/circassi.htm
to the tune 'Jamie Allen' http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/6354
The rest of the evening can be as English, Irish, Scots, American or mixed as you like.
it's too short notice.
why bother posting it other than a vague feeling of if you post it you'll have done your bit?
to plan a good worthwhile really worthwhile money-raising event will take a longer than what has been given. i will only get involved if there promises to be enough players who absilutely promise they will be at an event which we decide to do, which "will" raise money. email from this site if you are serious, no plonkers of which there are far too many on this site
ragaman, why has no-one else amoung all the wonderfull cross-section of humanity that calls in here, answered you here, except a learner?
Fair point, Karate. I am not the organiser of the event. I first heard about it about a year ago and was promised an email giving the details, but heard nothing until a week ago. I am surprised, in fact, that the organisers had not advertised it on thesession.org before now.
I had hoped to get a band that I used to play with in London involved with it. Then, a few days ago, a friend told me of someone who had just moved to London to study at SOAS and was trying to organise a ceili for the event. As it turned out, the band had a booking for that date. My initial thought when posting here was to try and muster some musicians together to form a scratch ceili band. However, I decided it would be best to consult the lady in London before doing this. So I cut that bit out of my post and just made it a last minute advertisement for the event.
"why bother posting it other than a vague feeling of if you post it you'll have done your bit?"
What is there to lose? The worst that can happen is people will ignore it.
"ragaman, why has no-one else amoung all the wonderfull cross-section of humanity that calls in here, answered you here...?"
Perhaps they all went straight to the website and are registering their ceili(dh)s as we speak .
Why do bands need to "put on ceil(dh)s"?
Aren't bands busy enough playing for everyone elses ceili(dh) without having to organise their own or aren't we allowed a Saturday night off?
Perhaps this request should have been aimed at ceilidh organisers not musicians. And possibly a lot earlier - it's a little like the phone calls asking if you are available to play this Saturday. To which I always retort, "If I was any good, wouldn't I already be booked?"
Some of us musicians can dance as well! While playing is (for me) much more enjoyable than dancing, it keeps household management in a good mood if I attend dances with her -she may even allow me to buy another box! So announcements such as the above about the BNC are not "too late".
