Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
I am building a garden wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians of Traditional Irish Music who have given us so much Joy! I want to list them by instrument/specialty, but find no such list. I wish to indicate with a Celtic Cross those who are in Heaven, such as Willie Clancy, but also wish to pay tribute to those living as well. Does such a list exist? And, I guess the question is: If you had a Garden Wall, who would you list in Tribute? Thanks so much. Any pointers/suggestions would be so appreciated. I have also given the query to Clare FM. (If I had more room, I'd add everyone from Galway, Mayo, Kerry and Cork...but, I fear I must limit it only to West Clare.) Also, I'm listing the famous Public Houses that gave Trad Music a home in which to enjoy the pleasure, so that's another list I would love to have suggestions/comments for as well.,
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
My suggestion would be to write the names high enough to keep them safely out of range of inebriated neighbours or roaming dogs in need of relief. You wouldn't want those hallowed names besmirched, would you ?
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
This site shows living Clare musicians as well as those that have passed, and it is not particularly up-to-date in either category, but it might nevertheless be useful:
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
Ofcourse there's somethign similar outside the former Gleeson's of Coore : a memorial for the musicians that left us.
Problem is ofcourse you're likely to leave out so many when you start naming names, I didn't mention Tommy McCarthy, Jimmy Ward before, they slipped my mind.
What about generations before: Hugh Curtin, Mary Haren etc from Cloghanmore, Letterkelly. Jimmy Hogan from Moy?
Do you include singers, dancers (I slipped in Marty Malley already): Ollie Conway and the like? Norah Cleary, mick Flynn, Peggy McMahon even.
Even in your own locality there are just so many that could be named, past and present.
You may as well go to Miltown Library and leaf through old issues of Dal gCais and jot down names you find there. Talk as well to people who know local music: Muiris O Rochain, Harry Hughes, Joseph O Connor etc
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
Flute player Christy Barry should be added to the list. I believe he still regularly plays music in pubs.
Do you intend to include the musicians who have been based in W. Clare but originally come from outside of the area? If so, the musicians like Charlie Piggott and Terry Bingham should be counted.
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
I don't think Charlie Piggot is in West Clare to be honest.
Anyhow, problem I have with this sort of questionnaires is that you'll get a list of famous names disregarding the people who made up the musical fabric.
I mean you get Micho Russell, if you wish to include Doolin and area, but where are Packie and Gussie? Paddy and John Killourhy, Mattie 'Bheag' Shannon and all the rest of them.
Staying with West Clare, there's already such an abundance of musicians, where are Joe Cunneen, Tom Carey, Stack Ryan, Solus Lillis, Patrick Kelly . Who do you include, who do you leave out, are the ones left out or overlooked any less valuable?
You include PJ Crotty but where's his brother Peadar?
If you include Terry Bingham, do you include PJ Howell, Jackie Daly, Miriam Collins, Henry Benagh or any other blow-ins?
How far do you go back, will Gilbert Clancy and Peter Smith be there or do you go back as far as Garret Barry's generation?
It's a bit of a pandora's box and maybe a blanket memorial covering all musicians, singer, dancers would be a more fitting tribute.
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
Yvonne and LourdaGriffin, Gerald Haugh, 'Buddy'O'Connell, Paddy Murphy, Joe Ryan, Peadar O Loughlin, Tony, Ita and Angela Crehan, Breandan McMahon, George Byrt, Michael Murphy, Jimmy Leyden, Mary Ann Sexton, the more I think about it, the more names come up.
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
Sorry, I'm not actually sure if Charlie is still based in West Clare. I just had a few tunes with him in Lisdoonvarna a couple of years ago. And yes, if he still lives around there, it doesn't necessarily mean he should be counted among W. Clare musicians.
P.S. You are too modest to include your own name, "kilfarboy." I know you're almost a native.
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
I somehow think of Charlie Piggot as somewhere near Kinvarra but I may be completely wrong there.
I somehow feel that it's appropriate to honour all people who contributed to traditional culture (let's take it a bit broader than just music), rather than pick out a few famous names or make arbitrary choices about who to include.
The late Tom Munnelly spoke about 'the great many inconspicuous folk who made up the greater part of our traditional landscape, the grasslands which nurture the occasional spectacular flower and without whom we would have absolutely nothing'.
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
In the end, though, you should do the research, as kilfarboy suggests. It would be really odd to build a memorial to a list of people generated by 50,000 strangers. How do you know that nobody is going to slip in a made-up name?
The other thing that bothers me about this is the idea of attaching a religious symbol to the names of the deceased, who may or may not have shared your own religious beliefs. I think that is a sign of disrespect.
Despite the length of the list so far, here are a few more: Elizabeth Crotty, Bernard O'Sullivan, Gerdie Commane, Joe Ryan, Tommy McMahon, Peadar O'Loughlin, Jacqueline McCarthy, Bernadette McCarthy, Tommy Keane, Josephine Marsh, Mick Kinsella, Edel Fox, Susie Cox, Jack Talty, Rory McMahon, and one that I think kilfarboy already mentioned, the ubiquitous multi-instrumentalist and singer known affectionately as etc.
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
Interesting You slip in Bernadette and Jaqui but leave out Marion (who, like Jaqui lives in Co Galway by the way) and Tommy keane is a Waterfordman living in Co Galway. Just shows how arbitrary these things are.
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
I also seem to have left out Tommy Jr. As you say, "you're likely to leave out so many when you start naming names", and it is arbitrary. I guess if I were doing such a project, I'd make it very inclusive, counting those who give/gave their music to West Clare, regardless of where their roots are, and those who gave West Clare music to wherever they settled.
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
I was thinking of Tommy jnr as well, but didn't say anything because he isn't living here, saw him a few weeks ago and he was all cementy, which he said was because he was building an extension for his house so he is around at times anyway.
Something as inclusive as possible would be nice, there are just too many people who have contributed something and a lot never sought or got much recognition outside their own parishes or even their own townlands. But they are just as deserving.
Was around Spanish Point a couple of times today but didn't spot anyone ready to start a wall yet.
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
Joe Ryan, Casey, Crehan, O'Loughlin, Patrick Kelly, Clancy and John Kelly. Clare people seem more interested paying homage to people than playing like these me. The interest in meitheal and ceili bands horse style seems to take preference to playing like these people though. have the next generation got the intricate subtle ornamentation to take up this legacy or are they horses for ceile band courses? Haven't heard too many taken up the torch. Have you?
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
Clare people seem more interested paying homage to people than playing like these men i meant to say. Sorry for any confusion. Before you attack i realise the above are outstanding musicians and impossible to replace. But from my experience Clare is now home to the tourist trazz-ennis buzz and then the opposite boring simple music whic is not characteristic of the intricate detail and effect of their great countymen of former years. I hope i am wrong but i doubt it very much
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
I suppose it all depends where you are in Clare. Patrick Galvin's young granddaughter plays in a pure West Clare style, so do the hundreds of young people that go through Brid O Donohue's hands. It's there, if you care to see it.
Re: Wall of Tribute to West Clare Musicians by Instrument/Specialty
If you wonder why there's a movement towards the Gary Shannon, Padraic O Reilly, Timmy Collins ceili band style: it's what gets you high marks in competitions at the fleadhanna.

John Joe Tuttle, see how easy it is to overlook people?
Is Eamonn McGivney considered to have earned his West Clareman-ship yet?
