Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

A highly entertaining weekend was had by all I think in sunny Gundagai just now...

Pick of the groups? Some mob called The Rounders... and I'm not just saying that because I know them! A couple of videos for you, from their third gig upstairs at the Emporium...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22UHtVIrHg0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5agSZoRIbY

(First one might not have fully processed yet... try again shortly...)

Bridie you really should do this sort of thing more often. Superb sets!

What did everyone else think of the festival as a whole?

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

It was a great weekend and The Rounders deserve the praise - superb fiddle and button box playing in particular. Looking forward to catching them in their new incarnation at the next fest. bb - where's the next gig?

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

I think bb should hold her head up high - sounded great. And more
importantly I think she and the accordion player were on the same
frequency. For example the ornaments seemed to be well
coordinated. One surprise - I was geared up for
some 5/8 or 7/8 tunes like Flook or Tola Custy - Rounders were
conservative in that respect but sounded fresh.

The festival highlight for me was Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh ( I used 'cut
and paste'). There aren't too many trad players who can make time
stand still - he's one of them (along with Martin Hayes - I can't actually
think of a third one). Instead of trying "out do" everybody with a
zillion crunchy ornaments, he's gone in the opposite direction.
Thanks to Culture Ireland for bringing him and his two mates
Eithne Ní Chatháin - a wonderful sean nos singer and herself a
great fiddler and her brother Enda O' Chatháin who kinda took a
'back seat' to the other two but also an outstanding fiddler.

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

... actually I have no idea if they are brother and sister - they are
related in some way or other

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

I was kinda surprised the Trad session fizzled out at 1:00 am on
Saturday - either that or it moved to some top secret location. Another
surprising thing is that there were enough players for about
4 good sessions, and yet everybody tried to pack into the one room.
The guys from Tulca Mor stood in doorway for a couple of minutes
wanting to play, but gave up and went away.

Another room had 3 people in it playing walzes and airs and odd
bits of crap kind of half-heartedly. In another year I'll have enough
confidence to try to stir that up into something else.

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Thanks for posting those kooka!! Good thing you didn't tell beebs you were video taping the gigs though or the heart attack she thought she was having all week end might actually have eventuated!!

It was an awesome weekend. Congrats must go out to Pam and Norm and all the volunteers for yet another superbly run fest. The highlight for me would have to be seeing the mighty JigSystem for the first time. You lads cranked!!! P.s. Gerns has feet that would put 90% of percussionists i know to shame :). The other highlights aside from the many musical ones far too numerous to mention would have to be whiskey in the jail at 3am and ham and eggs in the niagra at 2pm the day after!!!

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Rounders was definately my highlight. mad crankin choonz and playing from all... hup

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

I've gotta say the sound quality on the videos doesn't do the band justice - they sounded much better in the flesh. But I like how the first video shows their skill in the sychcronised leg jiggling department :-)

# Posted on September 22nd 2008 by dogbox

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Yeah sorry about that, these came from my very dodgy compact digital still camera... had I used anything more 'professional' Bridie would have noticed and no doubt refused to go on stage at all...

I have another video of young LITE's leg-jiggling as well. He wasn't even playing at the time. I got a chuckle out of that.

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Wow, that was great! Good on ya Beebs for your solo. You didn't even stop playing when someone shouted "BRIDIE!!!" ;-)

Thanksfor the link, kookabat! Way to go Rounder! More!

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Great videos, great music and great festival. Was well worth crossing Australia to go to this Festival.

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Oh fantastic! Yay The Rounders. I loved the second vid - the sound quality was better than the first, and ooooooo that solo bb ... fantastic stuff. Remember that name changes are confusing ... so let us know what you transmogify into, hey!

Any more vids? Hup and Donough, didn't you take your cameras and capture some magic moments in between sessioning away to your hearts content ... seems like there were plenty of them ... while my little compensatory activity turned hugely disasterous before it eventually, too late, resolved itself ... I knew I shouldda just packed up, hang the bluudy logic, and come ... big sigh!

# Posted on September 23rd 2008 by Clear Drops

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Plenty of magic moments (I meant) ... and then I would have been on the road a long way from the havoc that blew through this place yesterday lunchtime ...

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Sorry 'Drops - no camera - beautiful noises to remember though

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Hup ... gee I can see you smirkin' from here ... but I'm really glad you got there yourself ... sigh!

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Sorry to say I have no videos of the weekend. Brought my camera but was having too much fun to take lots of session photos - nothing to do with alcohol!
Sorry I didn't meet you Hup; or did I??

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Donough, I didn't know how to go about finding you. During the
session on Friday I was sitting to the right of Fred Graham for a while
and also near bb and zina. I introduced myself to zina but she seemed
less than enthusiastic about that session.org connection so I
decided to not look for any more sessioners.

# Posted on September 23rd 2008 by Hup

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

what other session.org'ers were there on friday night? that was a mighty session - great time! I couldn't believe the amount of players squeezed in there

# Posted on September 23rd 2008 by camwebby

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

You should have said something Hup - I had no idea that was you sitting there! I only worked it out after I read your post.

I had a lovely time at the festival - thought it was great fun. Apart from the heart attack feelings :-)

Oh and re flook and Calico etc, I like that stuff - and play it in sessions and stuff, but we are just trying to get our own sound if you know what I mean - not copy other peoples stuff.

# Posted on September 23rd 2008 by bb

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

I was in Lott's on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, plus most of Sunday afternoon :)

Hup - the Saturday session didn't fizzle out - the bar staff asked us to leave, so most people went across the street to the Criterion. I'm not sure how late that went, I left "early" because I had the flu. And I'm not sure what time you got to Lott's, but at one stage there were indeed four sessions on the go - we only moved into the dining room after they'd finished serving food :)

BTW If anyone connected with the festival reads this board, thanks again - it was a great town, with some great session venues and friendly locals ... in both senses of the word :)

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Um - also - I wouldve been way worse had I know that kookabat was recording. But I wouldve even been worse than that again had I know that WIN news crew was filming it. We were having dinner at a pub in the snowys yesterday when we saw ourselves playing on the 6 o'clock news. We almost choked on our dinner. Very surreal. Lucky I didnt have a clue at the time :)

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

bb, you on the TV news and I didn't think to get an autograph! Seriously though that's great exposure and well deserved.
If you haven't had a heart attack by now on stage it isn't going to happen.
It never occurred to me until Sunday afternoon that there were probably other mustard boarders there and it would have been nice to put more faces to names but I just ran out of time. Wish I could have stayed for the Sunday night as well.
Orson Carte - hope that Legionnaire's Disease is getting better finally. Keep taking the tablets but don't forget to stop when you are cured!
Camwebby I have worked out who you were now - I am a bit slow on the uptake.

# Posted on September 23rd 2008 by Donough

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Yeah, I'd say the wave was awesome! bb's band cranked and so did jig system. And we had mad tunes in a freaky-ass jail, what could be better?

# Posted on September 23rd 2008 by kjay_bc_box

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

$%^%$^&*, Orson - missed the boat, didn't I? I hope the Nash next year
has a few extra cubby holes for sessions -- I could accomodate one
in my house, which is about 10 min. walk away from it

# Posted on September 24th 2008 by Hup

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Seeing Orson and his partner sitting against the back wall in a packed session at Lott's on Sat night pumping out tunes with everyone was a memorable session experience for me. Great times.

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

anyone else having problems seeing the second video??? something about it being a private video?

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Sorry Cam - I asked Kookabat to take it down on account of my fiddle being broken and really out of tune. Have to put it in the shop - might have to have the whole belly replaced. Hopefully not :(

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

kk - is your fiddle still playable? good luck with it

# Posted on September 24th 2008 by camwebby

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

bb - what happened to your fiddle??
Dogbox where were you during that Saturday evening session? were you playing there as well? What an appropriate name for Gundegai - Dog (on the tucker)Box!!

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

I know this is a bit late but just wanted to say that I agree with everyone RE: the weekend. It was awesome! We've just gotta work out a way to change the Criterion into a more tunesy and less stabby kind of venue....

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Oh and late in the evening- you should stop being so modest, you know you guys are pro and defo way better than those Melbourne hacks, RigJiggen or whatev.

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

P.S. I also have a video of the Rounders crankin some tunes but it's at the jail and I feel a bit disinclined to youtube it..... It's mighty stuff though, but ya know...

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

hi Donough,
During the Saturday night sesh I was drinking creamy pints with some old mates and just enjoying the music and the craic. On the Friday night I was sitting over in the corner next to Orson & playing a black button box.
Sorry, but you won't find any photos or youtube clips to unmask this little puppy ;-)

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Oh, come on, the world is poorer for not having that video, I'm sure!

Happy Birthday to Beebs
Dogbox, you mysterious puppy, sorry I missed you. I take it you worked out which scraper on the fiddle was me.
I am glad I got to see that video before it got spirited away.

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Mark my words, one day those cheeky kids from south of the border will get in trouble with the session police for underage tune playing.
But from the sound of your music you're well and truly off your P plates :-)

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Happy Birthday BB! nothing's secret according to facebook.

You should put the video back up for sure! It's all i have to remember the festival that 'could have been'. Planning for next year tho.

Anyone from here going to Maldon?

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Another year older? Tch, tch. Soon you'll be too old to be the young fiddle prodigy you once were.....

:-)

Happy day!

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Hmm, thought it might happen that there was a bit of a squash in the session pubs by the sound of it. Seems always to be a challenge at festivals. Ah, nothing like the Nash with wall to wall sessions, like twenty of them! all in the same room - takes a race course betting stadium to do it though.

After years of travelling around NSW country towns, I always look at pubs called "The Criterion" with a bit of fear and trepidation.

# Posted on September 25th 2008 by Duijera Dubh

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Let alone pubs called "The Ute and Mullett" ! They're a reall worry.

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Hey davydd- might make it to Maldon for satdee night, maybe, but not promising anything. That good enough for ya?

# Posted on September 25th 2008 by sneetch

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Sounds good enough for me!

Last time i went to this festival it was great. But i didn't get many tunes in. Hoping to find some this time tho.

:o)

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Thanks guys:)

The first video is still up. And if I come across others that arent hideously out of tune I'll get them up.

Also to Will - I doubt I'm in any danger of being young anymore....sigh!

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Can everyone email info[at]turningwave.org.au and manager[at]turningwave.org.au letting them know of any disatifactions with the pub closing hours.

I think it is critical for a festival that the pub opening hours and serving hours are well publicised. It would have been nice to know on Friday night that the Criterion had a lockout, and that the Lott's pub would stop serving at 12.

I can appreciate that these country towns have a problem with alcohol and violence, but come on, we'd have poured thousands of dollars into the community on Friday night if we hadn't all ended up drinking in our tents/cabins/picnic tables by the river.

# Posted on September 26th 2008 by lujan

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

The people who run the festival thought that lotts was applying for a late license as that is what they had been told, lotts however didnt get it in on time and the people running the festival were just as unhappy about it as everyone else. Lotts has said they will get it done for next year. But then again...thats what they said last year as well.

# Posted on September 26th 2008 by bb

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

Sorry I should have said, I was asked to get people to email specifically because the people who run the festival wanted the feedback.

# Posted on September 26th 2008 by lujan

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

I thought it was a great festival and have no criticisms to make. Since there were so many people wanting to session it might be interesting to have a session venue listing in the program. Even include someone's veranda if they are happy for people to come and play there during the day. Include a short sentence about available times and availability of drink. This might decentralise the sessions but heck there was plenty of people to go around.
Oh yeah the good weather needs to be made a permanent fixture too!

# Posted on September 26th 2008 by Donough

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

As many of us might know, the National Folk Festival virtually travelled from town to town for something like twenty or thirty years before it finally settled permanently in Canberra - at a racecourse / exhibition ground. It has gone from strength to strength ever since.

While the country town businesses, especially accommodations and eateries might welcome the infusion of cash that a festival brings, at micro level, many of the regulars at pubs could actually be unhappy about "losing" their pub for a few nights. Did many locals show up to listen to the sessions?

The other thing I notice about country towns is the "bio-clock-timeframe" to coin an expression perhaps. 9.30pm is generally regarded as getting on a bit late in some of these towns, certainly anything after midnight can be regarded as a bit unearthly. My guess is that there will be very few pubs in country towns happy to continue on past midnight, and even at that time they'd probably view it as having gone a couple of hours over time. Gundagai (and Goulburn for that matter) are pretty typical in this regard, in my opinion anyway.

When I saw the size of Lotts pub, it was apparent to me that space was going to be a big problem, as well as the likely closing time. Why did the Criterion have a lock-out - did they not want the music there or do they generally have a problem at that pub on a Friday night. Session space in pubs always seems to be an issue at festivals held in towns.

There's a lot to be said for having a session in a room at one of the local clubs. They are lot bigger and often have spare rooms with bar service. There will still be the closing time issue though.

If there was significant camping space, perhaps a session marquee next time, in the camping ground where people can play all day and night if they wish. Then everyone will be happy campers - as long as some campers want to get some sleep.

Re: Turning Wave 08 - some YouTubings...

I have a couple more videos of that lot and a few others, they need a little cleaning up but you'll see 'em here first.

Once Beebs changes her mind (and we all know it'll happen eventually) I'll open up the second one again.
