I'm trying to transfer some old audio cassette tapes onto Audacity on my laptop using a lead with a 3.5mm jack plug at each end.
The crux of the problem is that, however low I set the microphone volume on Audacity, the wave form of the tunes I'm recording pretty much fills the top of the screen with blue, and when played back, they are too loud and there is a lot of distortion, which it doesn't seem possible to get rid of by adjusting output volume.
Is there a way of solving this?
And check that you are using the Line in input on the pc NOT the microphone input. Set playback volume level on the cassette player to approx middle. Should be ok then.

Re: Audacity recording problem
What output are you using on the cassette? If it's the headphone socket try turning the cassette volume down
