Fiddle (and other instruments!) player wanted for UK gigging band

Fiddle (and other instruments!) player wanted for UK gigging band

Hi all,

Our fiddle player / piper is leaving after many happy years with the band, so we're looking for a replacement to start towards the end of November.

Ideally we'd like someone who can also play the uilleann pipes and anything else is a bonus!

We are based in N Gloucestershire / Oxfordshire and do gigs most weekends - some pubs, quite a few private functions, the odd festival and other more formal concert venues, and we occasionally do gigs abroad. We have some great equipment now - a large Mackie sound desk and decent foldback speakers, which makes it all a bit more fun.

We play mainly Irish tunes, but there's the odd Venezuelan / Scottish / Welsh music as well. Take a look at a couple of YouTube clips below to see what we do (our departing fiddle player is on the front right of the stage). If you're interested, email me via this site!

Well, Mark, even though I can play the guitar, the 'zouk, and the bass, all of which feature in your band, I think you need more melody players. Can you not persuade any of the above musicians to take up the flute, the whistle, the pipes, or some sort of free reed instrument ? Another fiddler wouldn't come amiss either. While I can see the need for the odd big band, it may be all a bit too strum-along-a-celt for me.

Re: Fiddle (and other instruments!) player wanted for UK gigging band

Hi, I play the fiddle and northumbrian pipes and am based in Worcs. Normally I play recording sessions as a session player, including some recent work with Sting, but would like to play the live scene a bit more. I've toured with some of the major bands and still have connections with most of the bigger festivals if that would be of interest.
Why did the previous reply from Guernsey Pete suggest you could use a pipe player and maybe a fiddle player when that's exactly what you're advertising for ?? Nor were you advertising for guitar, zouk or bass which is what he seemed to offer ! Don't they understand English in Guernsey ?

Hi f1ngers! Thanks very much for the reply. I didn't understand Guernsey Pete's reply either - as you say, that's what we're looking for.

We do do some quieter numbers so if you go to YouTube and have a look at "other videos by Markharmer" then you might see some of the studio stuff we did back in 2002.

But great - I'll forward this to the band members and we can take it from there!

All the best,

Mark

PS the line-up of instruments (not counting our departing fiddler / piper): Flute, Banjo, 3 x Guitar, Whistle, Bodhran, Bouzouki, Fiddle, Harp, Bass. Obviously we don't play all of these at once.

Our departing fiddle player played the low D whistle, Mandolin (a bit), Fiddle and Scottish Pipes (very fast!).

Caw damme me, non ! We speak de patois dere !
I was just trying to suggest that I'ld probably like the band more with more melody and less rhythm instruments. But that's just my opinion.
