Fiddle E String

Fiddle E String

Hi,
Just wondering can anyone recommend a good Fiddle e String, Using dominants on my fiddle, but the E string is very weak,
Is the Gold E the way to go ? if so what brand ?
Or what are the other alternatives ?
Thanks.

Re: Fiddle E String

Just curious, are you using the wound E your Dominants?

Re: Fiddle E String

Lenzner Goldbrokat; cheap and brillant.

Re: Fiddle E String

(I'm mixing this string with Thomastik Vision Titanium solo G, D and A. I can recommend you those strings instead of the dominants, which respond slower, have an extreme long break in time and a short life time).

Re: Fiddle E String

Thanks not sure if wound or not, But it is very weak on sound..
I am going to get a set of evah's maybe in a few months,
but in the meantime just looking for a good e string, thanks for assistance so far.

Re: Fiddle E String

Regarding Lenzner Goldbrokat , are the other strings of the set ok to use, I see a set online at the moment cheap enough ? would they equal dominants ?

Re: Fiddle E String

Premier
Look no further than the E I eventually settled on here
http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/18340

I struggled for a LONG time trying to find a suitable E. This was the solution (and costing £4.89 and next day delivery, 'just the ticket')

Re: Fiddle E String

the brightest E string I ever tried is the Pirastro flexicore. also the other strings of this set are very brilliant and last much longer than dominant , keeping their sound for months. With the dominant , an additional problem is the unwrapping of the wound after a short while

Re: Fiddle E String

Regarding Lenzner Goldbrokat : the E is the exception, the other strings got so bad reviews I never even tried them.

Re: Fiddle E String

Re: Fiddle E String

Anybody got an update on the reported value of wound E strings in preventing the dreaded "Whistling E"?

Re: Fiddle E String

I use a Jargar E but try different types - what sounds great on someone else's fiddle may not on yours.

Re: Fiddle E String

Re: Fiddle E String

I just tried Thomastik's Vision string (not the titanium version), at heavy (!) gauge. Very sweet, and the E, although it's not wound, is fairly whistle-resistant. They're a bit quieter, but the payback is a mellow sweetness.

I had been running Tonicas for a long time, but I think I've found myself a new string. They're even a little less expensive than Tonicas, but I'd pay more (but that's our little secret, okay?).

Re: Fiddle E String

Evah Pirazzi Soloist E, or the Obligato gold E. Both are strong without being strident, and last for-freakin' -ever, and I play *a lot*.

Re: Fiddle E String

I've been using a gold E-string on both my fiddles for some time, and it's better for clarity and smoothness than anything else I've tried. I've been using them for so long I'm not quite sure what they are, but the tailpiece end is black and the peg end is green, with a yellow plastic sleeve for the groove in the bridge (Pirastro Obligato ... possibly?)
They don't whistle, but I'd suggest that a whistling E is usually not so much a consequence of the string or bow but of a fault in bowing technique.

Re: Fiddle E String

Piastro universal E - it's a wound string and seems to hold up ok. I'm
using it with a combo of helicore and spirocore

Re: Fiddle E String

...I can't identify what the Hound is using though ...

Re: Fiddle E String

Thanks for all the assistance,
I think I will just buy a set of new strings with a decent E,
Maybe the Evahs...

Re: Fiddle E String

I can confirm the Es I'm using; they are Obligatos, as I suspected. They're left over from sets of Obligatos I've used over the years, and these Es are still lasting. Currently, I'm using them successfully with heavy Helicores on my modern Jay Haide (my session fiddle), and with Vision Titaniums on my old German fiddle.
Premierview, I expect the Evah E will do fine - it comes from the top end of the Pirastro stable.

Re: Fiddle E String

try Larsen Tzigane - probably the top of the price range, but amazing.

Re: Fiddle E String

Late in joining this but I also like Evah E--I haven't tried the Tzigane strings; those and Passione are next on my list.

Re: Fiddle E String

I find the gold to be rather week. A good quality plains steel with more "body" would be a Hill. Might try the new flexocore wound E by Pirastro. A warmer sound when high end is too edgy.
