Got the good news yesterday during a mid-day session in Monkstown that Tullamore have achieved the “three in a row” and will host next year's event. Most of us had expected this but now it's official!
Re: Tullamore confirmed for 2009 All-Ireland Fleadh
Ah, the pulling power of Brian Cowen eh!! Some things never change is this 'ol country. You'd want to be keeping an eye on the grants and the cash coming in etc.
Re: Tullamore confirmed for 2009 All-Ireland Fleadh
Whatever about the Taoiseach's pulling power, it's great that the Fleadh is back in Tullamore as the town is about the best (apart from Listowel) for an All-Ireland. Rumour has it that he visited a few sessions at the last Fleadh and bought some drinks for the punters so we'll have to look out for him next time - maybe if we play "Drops of Brandy" he'll know what to get us. On a more sensible note Dilis, the Fleadh is indeed a week earlier with the Éigse starting on Monday, 17th and the main Fleadh weekend being from from Friday 21st to Sunday, 23rd.
Re: Tullamore confirmed for 2009 All-Ireland Fleadh
The Scoil Éigse summer school will take place in Tullamore from 16 - 21 August, 2009, and Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2009 will take place on the weekend of 21 - 23 August, 2009.
Re: Tullamore confirmed for 2009 All-Ireland Fleadh
Thanks Martin. I should have said the Éigse starts on the 16th as there is always a Club Éigse session on the Sunday night - probably in the Texas building again.
Re: Tullamore confirmed for 2009 All-Ireland Fleadh
Why change the dates ? !! Dont fix something that is not broken
If the schools in Tullamore are returning on 1st Sept 09 and could not accomodate the fleadh, then Tullamore should not have been given the fleadh.
I am sure other places such as Westport, Ballina, would have been more than accomodating.
The return to school after summer dates are flexible depending on individual schools.- returning anytime from 1st to 7th sept.
Will this change not effect other little festivals held in mid august ? and the ones that follow the fleadh such as Gurteen.
Festivals that have been organised around the All Ireland fleadh dates for many years.
What about all the people that go to the fleadh on the monday, which is still buzzing as all the northern irish / uk / scottish contingent are still all there, it being a UK bank holiday.
This change will kill of theoff fleadh on
Monday and Tuesaday.... historically have been the best days of a fleadh....with some great sessions.
I do hope this is not some politically influenced change of date!!
How was the change voted on and agreed at HQ ?? This is madness, and a case of the tail wagging the dog!!

Re: Tullamore confirmed for 2009 All-Ireland Fleadh
it's not just because of Tullamore schools, but a countrywide trend for schools to open earlier. There would be a problem for young people taking part in 15-18 competitions on the Sunday, then having to be at school on the Monday, after possibly a very long drive, depending which part of the country they come from. (It took me over 6 hours to get to Tullamore from the wilds of West Cork) It might also be a problem as regards those attending the Scoil Eigse, if their school term has already started.
Re: Tullamore confirmed for 2009 All-Ireland Fleadh
I disagree, none of the schools in the republic open in August. The monday would be 31st of August. The schools will open at the earliest on 1st of September which would be Tuseday 2009.
Re: Tullamore confirmed for 2009 All-Ireland Fleadh
Oh yes they do, Fiddle29 - My daughter returned to school on 27th this year. Many schools started on the Monday of that week - caused some problems for Community Games too.
Re: Tullamore confirmed for 2009 All-Ireland Fleadh
I have to agree, however, that as you said, other festivals will be affected - and the UK Bank Holiday must have had a benficial effect on numbers in past years.
Hopefully some of the smaller festivals will gain by moving to the Bank Holiday.
Re: Tullamore confirmed for 2009 All-Ireland Fleadh
Please note that Tullamore has been selected once again for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann at the Comhaltas Ardchomhairle meeting on Saturday, 13th September.
The Fleadh will take place earlier than in previous years (21 to 23 August) mainly in order to avoid clashing with the start of the new school year.
Full details are shown on the attached Comhaltas Press release.

THREE IN A ROW FLEADH FOR TULLAMORE
Tullamore will celebrate “three in a row” with the good news from the Ardchomhairle of Comhaltas at the week-end that the town has again been selected to host next year’s All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil.
The 2007 and 2008 Fleadh held at the Offaly venue have won many accolades at home and abroad. Many tributes were paid by the Ardchomhairle to the Fleadh Committee and the host community on the excellence of the great cultural and social event.
The Director General of Comhaltas, Senator Labhrás Ó Murchú, said that Tullamore has set the bar very high for future venues. “Their innovation, dedication, professionalism, hospitality and attention to detail were inspiring. They have placed our cultural traditions on a pedestal and have raised the morale of the hundreds of thousands of people who attended the Fleadhanna for the last two years. We all felt so very welcome in the town which has earned such wide spread admiration. Tullamore is an ideal venue for the Fleadh and will rank as one of the best of all time”.
Senator Ó Murchú said that what was very significant about the Fleadh in Tullamore was the effective partnership which existed between Comhaltas, Local Authorities and other public agencies, Gardaí, sponsors, local media, the business community, venue proprieters and the general public.
Fleadh 2009 will officially open on Monday, 17th August, and continues for a whole week.
