...and I've also paged the FLUTE PLAYER who sent me this video so they can come and explain who John Blake it.
Seriously, have any of you played for any length of time with a flute not @ A= 440? Minus well shove a knitting needle in your eardrum. I feel Mr. Blake's pain, I really do.
Sure, it was fine in the 1880s, but have you looked at a calendar recently?
(Disclaimer so no one thinks I'm a jerk) The flute is my favorite instrument to play with as a fiddler, hands down. I love them all, pipes, whistles, boxes, banjos, you name it, but magic happens with a flute and fiddle together.
"I was hoping he was really going to show how to fix it. I have an old bamboo flute that sounds like the one he played, and I'd hate to toss it."
Greg, if you really want to fix it you should go get the RTTA software from Terry McGee's site and document the intonation. Then you can post your findings on the Chiff & Fipple Flute forum and you'll get plenty of advice on things to try.
John Blake is a super awesome flute player. Last time I saw him he was playing with piano accordion virtuoso Martin Tourish in Miltown at the Willie Clancy Week:
He's def. one of the best folk musicians out there, equally adept at playing the pure stuff and experimental celtic grooves. I swear, last time I saw him in action, I wasn't the same for at least a month.
Funny how The Giant Snowman has only made two comments on this board over the last three months and both are in praise of John Blake and Martin Tourish!
2-1 on he's John Blake.
11-10 on he's Martin Tourish.
Evens that he could be both.
33-1 the field.

American humour - how funny. Shame he didn't get his beard caught in it.
Who's John Blake? Is he any good?

Bless all you fluters who care, I love you all.
All you fluters who blow A not = 440 and couldn't care less? Please see wood chipper above.

I'm just finishing up the mods to my antique Czech flute based on the advice from that bunch:

(PS - SWFL even let me play it for the whole session today.)
