Bouzouki tutorials

Which would be better for a total beginner the one with Zan McLeod or the Mad for Trad cd-rom?

Re: Bouzouki tutorials

I have Zan's. If you already have a basic understanding of the structure of the music and you already play another instrument like guitar, this should be great for you. I know Zan personally and found him to be a good teacher. In this DVD he gets you playing at a level where you should be comfortable in a session atmosphere.

Don't have the Mad4Trad thinger. My advice? Get Zan's thing and it will definitely sort you out. Then just WATCH a LOT of Alec Finn. Mick Leahy, Cyril O'Donoghue, Eoin O'Neill, Pat Marsh, and Michael Holmes are all other bouzouki players you should be listening to.

Re: Bouzouki tutorials

If you have never played an instrumentor stringed instrument or are just barely able to play scales or cleanly go across strings with the right hand on the zook I would NOT get Zan's video.

note what DADGADLad is saying:
"already have a basic understanding of the structure of the music and you already play another instrument like guitar, this should be great for you."

I have not seen the Mad4trad video...
where are you located - I might be able to recommend a teacher..

Re: Bouzouki tutorials

Anyone interested in bouzouki would surely want to take part in workshop taking place in Graiguenamanagh co. Kilkenny on Sept 27th. Alec Finn is the tutor. see www/feilefreaney.net

Re: Bouzouki tutorials

Nothing helps more than learning from someone that knows how to play and how to teach. You should consider ZoukFest next June in Santa Fe, New Mexico if you can possible make it. Instructor list not yet out. Roger Landes will be there for sure. Check out www.zoukfest.com to see last years classes. Andy Irvine was at ZF this past year.

Re: Bouzouki tutorials

This will be my first instrument. I'm at college right now so access to a teacher is very limited. I'm hoping I would be able to learn the basics from one of these tutorials.

The MfT tutorial is very basic. The problem is that it is orientated towards GDAE tuning, while most bouzouki players have their instruments tuned GDAD.

Re: Bouzouki tutorials

Would I pick up the basics from Zan's? Or would I be able to learn it in GDAE and then just switch to GDAD once I'm more comfortable with the instrument?

Re: Bouzouki tutorials

Tim O'Brien's got a good GDAE video out, if that's your prefered tuning. John McGann also has a great book and CD set that mainly features GDAE, with some backup using DGAD. I play in GDAD and found both very useful.
