Re: Fakers are sucking the life out of of irish music
if yout from a gaeltacht area thats supported by udaras na gaeltachta then you hit the nail on the head for faker. How many people do we know who get paid by the taxpayers of Ireland to raise their family through the medium of irish and yet sponge off the good intentions of a people? Should the real native people be draggedd down with this? I dont think so. The same thing is in danger of happening in irish traditional music whereby fakers from the geographic areas of Sliabh Luachra whonhave zero connections with Padraig O'Keefe or George Whelan fake their sleezy way to grants and money having turning their backs on a dying tradition at the vital moment previously. Where would one find a Sligo fiddler, a piper from Sliabh Luachra? Ha ha in a grant application but not in real life. Silly concertina and organists who were born in the geographic area. Wake up you morans, we spot that geographics, briocghaeltacht areas and music and indeed a physics have nothing in common with each either excepts that fakers link them.
Re: Fakers are sucking the life out of of irish music
No, the life wasn't sucked out of Irish music. The life was drawn upwards and out of Irish music. How?
I'll jolly well tell you how: by a wavering green ray which has been beaming down for months, piercing the roof-tiles of pubs and kitchens worldwide. This energy-sapping ray is merely one of several "kultur-drainink tools" deployed by the crew of a craft captained by none other than Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. (You know him—he's the guy who looks like that actor who played a KGB agent in that James Bond film? 'Memba?)
Or, most players are just sloppy poseurs like me. That's Theory Two.
Re: Fakers are sucking the life out of of irish music
At times like this the english language falls short. If want to get pedantic
Irish music is played by the people who live on the island and those little bits off its coast.
But what about Kevin Burke, Michael McGoldrick, John Carty, Liz Carroll
etc. and the rest of us?
Nope, sorry - not Irish -- but the African and Polish migrants _are_
Irish. And wait til you hear the music their children starting making -
it won't be your grandpa's Irish music.
Re: Fakers are sucking the life out of of irish music
Lord Gordon has a point, albeit badly voiced but a point none the less. However, one cannot paint the whole of Irish speaking Ireland and its relationship with the grants system with one broad brush stroke. Apply the same argument to the midland farmers or the coastal fishing industry or CCE or a whole slew of minority interests and expect to get away lightly. Give us some background comrade, flesh in the picture for us.
Re: Fakers are sucking the life out of of irish music
How is it that contributors who have time for paragraphs of incomprehensible ranting are unable or unwilling to provide a little identification?
Newspapers tend to require at least a traceable name and address before publishing a letter. Even a fictitious location and name of spurious instrument played would make me feel more indulgent.
Re: Fakers are sucking the life out of of irish music
Maybe farmers shouldn't get supplements for staying on the land or fishermen either. Does Lord Gordon want everyone living in one of the sprawling urban metropolis areas! As for rubbishing all the great musicians who have came out of Sligo, Sliabh Luachra and Gaeltacht areas down through the years, I think it says it all about this thread!
Re: Fakers are sucking the life out of of irish music
Al you're probably right and it was probably not worth wasting time on it. My only worry though is that some young impressionable person might be influenced by this drivel who, when he grows up and gets a government or civil service position, decides to cut all grants to those wasters who live outside the Pale!
Re: Fakers are sucking the life out of of irish music
OK, here's my guess:
The gubmint of Ireland gives grants to folks to move into and live in the Gaeltacht areas, and Lord Gordon would prefer to see that money given to the local people who have lived there for years, in order for them to uplift and preserve their own culture themselves.
Re: Fakers are sucking the life out of of irish music
Given that nobody really seems to know what the good Lord is talking about or even what his chosen dialect is, I am reminded of the quote by someone famous (Einstein, perhaps?) who said something to the effect of "It's amazing how a trifling investment of fact can yield such wholesale returns of conjecture."
Re: Fakers are sucking the life out of of irish music
Oh - and that anyone who posts on such sites as these are ruining the music cause we are all Fakers - which is funny because Lord Gordy - you posted in the first place...what a faker.

We should be proud of the Irish government's support of the language and in recent years in music from what i see. Although I don't speak Irish myself I can see the success of TG4 in promoting the language and the music.

Short?! Egads, more like sucked right down into CERN's newest black hole.
Here's a sobering thought: writing is just thinking made visible.

I love 'wake up you morans'. I hope the entire Moran clan is already considering an uprising.
And then there's 'where would one find a Sligo fiddler?' In Sligo still, I hope.
I see 'Lord Gordon' has been posting similar drivel on the 'pets' thread'.
