I'm wondering what tunes might go well with Cooley's Reel to make a simple, three-song set. I love Drowsy Maggie, King of the Fairies, and The Wren's (Hornpipe?). I don't know if any of those would work or not. I'm up for any suggestions or advice.
I'm playing bodhrán with my community concert band this fall, and I thought I might ask my director if I could play a short set after the piece with the bodhrán. I need some advice, though.
Drowsy Maggie / ??? / Cooley's is nice. I sometimes play that with an A-dorian reel in the middle, but try out a few different ones and see what sounds good. Just not another E-dorian reel.
Most places you go in Clare you'll find that Cooley's is normally followed by the Wise Maid. Sometimes you'll find the Bird in the Bush added on to make "three".
As I have scanned the various youtube clips over the past few months, I can't help but notice how many times I've seen Cooley's paired with the Banshee (McMahon's) I do not mean to condescend in anyway, but It's quickly becoming a very popular and common "beginner's reel set" globally as far as I can tell.
Frankly, I think you can cram a reel like Cooley's with just about any other set of reels known to human kind. It's a catch-all well known session war-horse.
I would like to start with Cooley's because in the piece the concert band is playing with me on bodhrán they end on a concert C (D natural — at least we end here in the 3rd clarinet part). I thought Cooley's first because it starts on a D so I could start right in.
Perhaps your best bet would be to play Tam Lin in Dm four times, getting faster each time through, then jump up into Am and just keep speeding up. The crowd will go wild--guaranteed. It's especially effective if the horn section comes in only on the B part of the tune and they swing their bells east and west in time to the downbeats....
The Tulla play Cololey's with the Pullet (aka The Shores of Lough Grainey, aka, Drag Her Across, aka Throw Her Across, aka Drag Her Around Around the Road) and Come West Along the Road for a three-some.
Look up and download "Fiddlers 3" on iTunes and you'll hear them play a lovely 3 set of "Tamlin/ Gravel Walk/ Cooley's Reel the more you hear this set the more they grow on you honest.
If I wanted to do Cooley's/Drowsy Maggie/ ?, what could I stick at the end? I have a song in mind, but I can never remember the name and I do'n't know who's recorded it. The above two songs are my favorites. I listened to Molly Ban (one of the many out there) yesterday and liked it, though it does sound a lot like Cooley's.

Re: Set with Cooley's Reel
A fairly common 'one that goes after' Cooley's is The Wise Maid.

Re: Set with Cooley's Reel
We often play Musical Priest/Cooley's/Jackie Colemann's.
Just my opinion but I don't think King of the Faeries would go well with it.

The road to Lisdoonvarna (reel) / Cooley's / All around the world, a great sounding set that goes down well.

Re: Set with Cooley's Reel
I was just wondering if Icould use the Kesh Jig here. I like it, but would it fit? If not, what is usually played with it?

Re: Set with Cooley's Reel
Nah, the Kesh is too obscure a tune.

Will, that settles it---I want you to produce my next cd.
But mind I want something to go with Music for a Found Harmonium.
