Fiddle: some kind of control device to play in tune...

Fiddle: some kind of control device to play in tune...

Has anybody heard about any precise device to work the accuracy on the fiddle? I usually do that with a simple chromatic tuner, but there's a problem with stability . I'd like to play faster without it gets mad with the notes switching...

Hey Bernie, are you "29" for you're from Brittany? :-)
Anyway, be sure that I don't denigrate my ears... I just want to believe them. Nuance.

Well, the easiest thing to do is to make sure your fiddle is in tune with itself and check yourself against open strings. It's relative pitch that you're after, and a chromatic tuner won't give you that.

Intonation is in your ears, not in your hands.

you could try one of those shock collars for dogs, but I don't recommend it. seriously though, get a better tuner - some of them can keep up pretty well

Learn to listen.

Reminds me of the classic:
Interviewer askes Jimy Hendrix, "Whiy do you play the guitar with your teeth?" Hendrix, "I don't, I play it with my ears."

Re: Fiddle: some kind of control device to play in tune...

So, you’re playing tunes at a slow tempo and watching a tuner at the same time? That seems like an indirect route to the skill you really need, which is playing in tune with what your ears hear. When I was torturing my first fiddle (and wife and cats), the thing that helped most was having some accompaniment. That constant pitch reference made a huge difference. Playing with a guitar player, I made more progress in two hours than in the previous two months of playing alone.

Re: Fiddle: some kind of control device to play in tune...

My question is why do so many flute players ask for an 'A', move the slide whilst blowing gently at the back of the hole, say thanks a million, and then horse into tunes half a tone (or more) sharp.

Just listen to the other instruments, and the whole sound lads!

You're playing with the wrong flute players by the sounds of it.

Re: Fiddle: some kind of control device to play in tune...

What are you talking about? Using a device to check your intonation on every note???
Why bother when you have ears? I'm assuming you have ears...
I've never heard of such a thing.
Windup?

Re: Fiddle: some kind of control device to play in tune...

Easy gang.

I bring an oscilliscope to every session. It sits on the table in the middle of our circle. I added video ports to it and spent some of our tip money on virtual reality headsets--enough for each player to wear one. You put on a headset, and the oscilliscope waves are right in front of your eyes. (It's also kinda nice not having to look at the grimaces our bodhran player always makes.) With this arrangement, I find that I no longer have to listen at all--the oscilliscope tells me everything I need to know to play each note in tune. In fact, sometimes the music is such a distraction, I wear noise-cancelling headphones.

Seriously, don't knock it till you've tried it.

Re: Fiddle: some kind of control device to play in tune...

that's impressive Will - all of our tips go to the waiter, so we have to make do with a strobe tuner and one of those home version game show buzzers that I use to alert everyone on those rare occasions when everyone hits the same note in tune. on a serious note though, I've used a tuner to check myself now and then and I think it helps, although it's certainly no substitute for learning to listen. I see people get frustrated because they can't figure out the source of the bad intonation. I like to laugh evilly to myself - if they would just develop their ears instead of relying on their electronic tuner they would know exactly who it was...
