What's this tune?

What's this tune?

You know the one... It goes "dum diddle diddle dee, dum diddly diddle die..." Please help me... I must find the name! ?

Is it time to re-tool the tune section, or re-work the requests tab to handle threads like these? It seems like there have been a lot lately. I think it's great that you can find the name of a tune by asking. And I try to be as helpful as possible when it comes to finding names for tunes for folks. Even if I don't know a tune, I have gotten pretty good at using either the tune search, or google for finding tune names for people. I have even posted a couple of threads with searching ideas for people (http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/14781)

But it seems like poor Jeramy spends an inordinate amount of time taking tune question threads, and appending them to the comments section of the tune, once people have figured it out.

I bet a tune finder tab would go like gangbusters. People could post links to YouTube clips, ABC, descriptions, or whatever, and it wouldn't necessarily clutter the discussions section. (If you hadn't noticed, this thread is the fifth consecutive thread asking for tune IDs... And 8 out of the last 20 - a full 40% of the last 20 threads... OK, actually a bit less, because this one is really just a windup...)

Re: What's this tune?

Tune finder tab -- good idea, Rev. Except Jeremy would still have to move stuff over to the tune comments (assuming it's worth keeping).

I still think the best solution is to encourage people to email members who are good at identifying tunes and are willing to help out.

Maybe add that advice to the FAQ's....

Re: What's this tune?

Be careful Will or you might drown in the deluge of personal messages.
I have found that it often takes several searches through different online sites to come up with a title. But maybe we could incorporate all the best suggestions and search facilities into one tutorial and link that to the FAQ.

Re: What's this tune?

Donough, I typically get a handful of such requests every week from a wide range of people. If I don't recognize the tune right off, it doesn't usually take too long to figure it out. I know other members who help out this way, too.

It's actually fun tracking down an unfamiliar tune--some real gems have come my way through such requests.

Re: What's this tune?

I for one am not dismayed that 40% of the recent Discussion threads are "Name This Tune" requests. That for me is one of the most useful and interesting aspects of the mustard board. I do get a bit weary with folks who simply link a You Tube; I feel you should make some initial effort to do the ABCs and search for the tune yourself, including using some of Reverend's tips (which I've printed and filed for my own reference). But frankly, I find tune-name discussions far more interesting than the endless stream of "dots vs. ear" or session-etiquette discussions. And as pointed out, it's both fun and a well-deserved chance for those with an encyclopedic knowledge of tunes to show off a bit. Perhaps I'm arguing for a separate tune-names tab here, and I admit I have no idea how much trouble it is for Jeremy to deal with them. But for now at least, I'm fine with them remaining in the Discussions tab.

Re: What's this tune?

I don't have a real problem with it being part of the discussion tabs, except that discussions that are "past the fold" (meaning, not on the first page, in this case) don't get as much attention.

If a thread is established, and getting lots of discussion, it can survive down to about the 4th or 5th page. But not everybody looks at the Comments tab. Most people come in and just browse the Discussion topics on the first page. So the endless tune requests can sometimes push more widely-interesting topics into oblivion.

And I agree with you, alec, I wish people would show some personal effort before they go to the trouble of posting a thread about it. But I also agree with Will, there are some great tunes to be found by people asking what they are.
