Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

We're seeking a fiddle player, well grounded in traditional folk, yet able to improvise with passion, originality and flair, from slow’n’haunting to fast’n’wild. Currently vocals, guitar, flute, bodhran and bass, we create our own interpretations of Scots/Irish/English folk songs/tunes (mainly traditional, some contemporary, some self-composed).

This summer we've been playing gigs at local events and folk festivals, with more planned for the autumn.

If you're interested, or know someone who might be, please do get in touch - thanks.

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

Sorry - forgot this was a national site - got used to using local sites.

We're in Bristol/Bath, UK. And we have a brain or two between us. :)

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

National? International, maybe more accurate. Thanks for the warning about the one brain between 2.

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

I think its actually 1-2 brains for 5 people at the moment.

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

I'm jealous.....paucity of cortical matter is thus presumably pandemic in trad circles....

"...paucity of cortical matter..."

LOL!

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

suegorgeous, you;re not the people who were looking for a fiddler some while ago are you?

I'm not a million miles away - I'd be up for a gig or two to see how it worked ...

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

The name makes me think of those you get on unwanted Message Center pop-ups late at night - but good luck, anyway!

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

How come people never ask for harmonica players then?

# Posted on September 7th 2008 by Steve Shaw

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

I think nicholas has a point here - it might be a good idea to change your user name (the Session does allow you to do this). Unless of course you want to suffer endless jokes, made at your expense ...!

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

Steve - you shouldn't feel persecuted, you're not alone. Not many people ask for kazoo players or Lambeg drum players, either!

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

Am based in Bath.. however am probably too young for your band ;). You can search for people by typing 'bath' or 'bristol' into the members area, these will shiw members that have Bath or bristol in their members description.

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

Mix - you're evidently right! :) I've used it for years elsewhere (where users are praps a bit more mature?!) without such problems. Looks like I'll have to resort to Folksinger359 or some such boring moniker... :)

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

Has any cutting-edge band used a Lambeg drum? It sounds rather a good idea.

Or indeed a kazoo break - a bit like The Humours Of Scariff whistle break in the Bothies' Music In The Glen track...

# Posted on September 7th 2008 by nicholas

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

Now come to think of it, in Newcastle (UK), they used to have traditional kazoo and drum bands playing "Bobby Shaftoe", "Cushy Butterfield" and tunes of that ilk. Do these bands still exist? If so, there might be a demand for kazoos up there - and maybe drummers too!

# Posted on September 7th 2008 by Mix O'Lydian

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

Yes, indeed they have them - tots dressed up like huge gaudy glinting tropical insects and sounding like them too, with those kazoos. I'm told it's a spin-off from American marching bands. Baton-twirling, etc., is probably a higher priority than musical product, which is usually a tooth-hurtingly out-of-tune generic buzz. For all that, they brighten up the scene round Co. Durham's ex-pit villages, the more so if there's some decent drumming. But they'd be too little to play the Lambeg...

Oh well ... I wonder if I'm on the shortlist ...

Ben

I sent you a mail a few hours ago - did you not receive it?

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

Still toying with the idea of a North-East band all suddenly whipping out kazoos and giving a startling, note-perfect rendition of Holey Ha'penny or The Hawk (harmonies optional) on these...

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

Any chance you kazoo fiends could start a new discussion on this topic, and give my fiddler hunt a chance? thanks :)

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

There is that advantage I guess :)......but then I could just do that myself with daft asides like this one.....:)

# Posted on September 7th 2008 by suegorgeous

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

yes, you could...

# Posted on September 7th 2008 by wyogal

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

Indeed. The whole point of these threads is that they ramble to Mars and back and tell people a whole lot of things they never particularly wanted to know. But as wyogal says, your request will be enshrined in the heading of the posts as long as they come.

Hi sue, I got it ... for some reason a lot later - and I *was* online. I'll reply to your e-mail. I'm going to try to get along to that gig ...

Nope - they're not even a necessary evil.

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

I think Suegorgeous is a great name, shows a certain confidence and honesty.

I am going to change my name to Sensational BB once I get the computer skills.

(Nearly said IT skills there, which would have left me open to a barrage of abuse)

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

What's the name of your band and do you have any place on the Web to hear your music? I've been thinking I'd like to start a similar band in the Southern California area for some time. Might want to steal your sound ;)

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

Yeah, Danny, and why do fiddle players always play flat, eh? along with all those concertina and accordion players - all these people playing flat - why on earth is that?

:-)

# Posted on September 8th 2008 by benhall.1

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

Because the earth is flat, of course.

# Posted on September 8th 2008 by nicholas

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

they just like to play lying down because they're lazy.

# Posted on September 8th 2008 by boxedup

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

I know ... it takes energy and commitment to play sharp all the time. Flute players just have more of this type of energy and commitment than other people.

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

"All the extra comments keeps it fresh on the "comments" tab."
in the spirit of keeping things fresh-have ye heard this one?:

Why is the viola bigger than the violin??

# Posted on September 9th 2008 by pipewatcher

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

BB - well, to a point, but also irony - after all, it's purely inner gorgeousness we're talking here! ;)

# Posted on September 9th 2008 by suegorgeous

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

Remind us, pipewatcher, I've forgotten that one...

# Posted on September 9th 2008 by nicholas

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

they're the same size- it's the violinist's head that is bigger...

# Posted on September 9th 2008 by pipewatcher

Re: Fiddle player wanted for gigging folk band

BH said: "it takes energy and commitment to play sharp all the time."

It's better to be sharp than out of tune, I always say.
