Bobby Casey re-release?

Bobby Casey re-release?

I've just been tapping names in on Amazon and discovered that Mulligan have released Bobby Casey's classic recording 'Taking Flight' on CD. Has this just happened recently? I haven't heard it mentioned anywhere or maybe my head's been the clouds too long. If so, why re-release something and not publicise it? It doesn't make much sense. Gael-Linn did the same thing with their wonderful re-release of Mick Mulcahy's first solo recording; it's not even available on their website. What's that all about?

Re: Bobby Casey re-release?

I purchased a Bobby Casey re-release for a friend as a Christmas gift last year. I can't remember the name, but that must be the one. I came across it quite accidentally on Custy's web site. My friend loves it.

A prize ~ get it, buy it for a friend, you'll be glad you did...

I have the LP. I'm glad to hear it is available again on CD now, sweet stuff. Thanks for the heads up, appreciated...

Re: Bobby Casey re-release?

Mulligan was taken over by Compass Records of Nashville a few months back. You can see which albums have so far been reissued by checking http://compassrecords.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=57.

Bobby Casey's 'Taking Flight' is not among them and I'm puzzled to see that it's listed as a CD on Amazon since I was unaware that it had ever been reissued in this format. The album purchased by Ceolagusrince was almost certainly 'The Spirit of West Clare' since 'Taking Flight' doesn't appear on Custy's website.

However, there is one other possibility. I wonder if the Amazon entry possibly refers to the blessed Dave Bulmer's Celtic Music label since said Bulmer purchased the rights to a number of Mulligan releases some time ago. One of these was The Bothy Band's debut which is surprisingly absent from the Compass Records list. It's quite possible that Bulmer released a limited quantity of 'Taking Flight', but since he doesn't have a website and is more than difficult to track down, it's difficult to know the answer.

Re: Bobby Casey re-release?

Oh, and I should have added that Gael Linn has never reissued Mick Mulcahy's debut LP in CD format.

Re: Bobby Casey re-release?

I've just tried repeatedly to see if I could chase up a CD copy of "Taking Flight" for sale, hoping to also purchase it as a gift for someone ~ no luck... I hope that such lovely music will again soon be available for others... While his music shows it, I wish some of his humour and heart by way of chat could also be included, as it has on other recent releases, as for Junior Crehan and Con Cassidy... Bobby Casey was a valued regular at the early Willie Clancy Summer Schools...

Fingers crossed X that someone will re-release it...

Re: Bobby Casey re-release?

Here's where I have just purchased the 'Taking Flight' CD from:http://www.amazon.co.uk/Taking-Flight-Bobby-Casey/dp/B0014GFHSY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1220720770&sr=1-2
Hopefully it is what it says it is!
And by the way, I know I said my head might be in the clouds, but I am currently listening to the Mick Mulcahy reissue from Gael Linn, so how can I manage that if has never been reissued? A track was played once by Aine Hensey on The Late Session, I couldn't find it on their website and ordered it by phone from Gael Linn. I can't understand why they wouldn't publicise it's release.

Re: Bobby Casey re-release?

Isn't a shame (a "sin") that we have to 'work' so hard to come by this fabulous (old) music?!?!? And there is soooo much still out there that needs to be reissued on cd and / or dvd!

Re: Bobby Casey re-release?

What's the catalogue number of the Mulcahy CD you have, Rathawaun? If it's CEFCD 050, then I'll bite my hat and wonder when Gael Linn reissued this. If it's not, then you're not listening to Mick Mulcahy's debut album.

As for the Amazon listing - it reads 'out of stock', so I hope you haven't forwarded any dosh.

Re: Bobby Casey re-release?

With the odds against it, let us know if you do end up with a CD of "Taking Flight", I've instead opted as a gift for a friend to purchase ~

"Bobby Casey: The Spirit Of West Clare"
http://www.thesession.org/recordings/display/2785

Which I got for about half the price of what Amazon had "Taking Flight" listed at, with more music and postage included in the price, for £9.93 & Free Delivery from ASDA...

http://www.asda-entertainment.co.uk/asda/9959969.product

IT IS BRILLIANT!!! My friend will love it. Don't hesitate to chase this up if you haven't already got it... I hope that "Flight" & "Cowhouse" are again made available for all...

Re: Bobby Casey re-release?

That's grand, Rathawaun, I'm delighted to eat all available headgear.

Like you, though, I'm puzzled why Gael Linn hasn't made the news of this release publicly available!

Re: Bobby Casey re-release?

Couldn't agree more, ceolachan. 'Spirit of West Clare' is a truly wonderful CD.I'm amazed you can get such specialist music from a supermarket. Meanwhile, I'm intrigued to see what's going to arrive in the post. Hopefully I haven't just paid £13.99 for a CD which doesn't exist! There were 3 seperate sellers when I ordered. Obviously everyone dived in and cleared them out!

Re: Bobby Casey re-release?

I was living in London when Bobby Casey was sessioning there and I never went to listen to him ... that's a huge regret.

Re: Bobby Casey re-release?

Worse still, Clear Drops:
I was helping to run a folk club in the back room of the pub where Casey played on the same night. Priorities.....

Re: Bobby Casey re-release?

... oh Oldstrings, that is just terrible. What we let slip without hindsight, hey. I know what I would have done ... but then I wasn't involved in any folk club in London either ...
Did you get to hear him at all?
