Irish music in Athens, Greece?

Irish music in Athens, Greece?

okay, I know there are other things to do in Athens when being on holidays there. But who knows - maybe there are lots of Irish people there who are dying to play tunes in November??? If so, I'd be delighted to get some contacts...

Re: Irish music in Athens, Greece?

Go down the Flea Market in Monastiraki (it's pretty central, not far from the Plaka night-life district below the Acropolis). The Flea Market is - or contains - a longish, narrow street between shops where, in 1979 (!), travelling buskers would take a pitch and try their luck. I did this and saw & met others this way. They included a Swedish fiddler I'd met / last seen in Galway a year before! In summer, the street was very crowded - it seemed the whole world came down it.

I haven't been back since so don't know what it's like now - in turns of regulation, e.g. - Then, Greeks seemed quite happy with buskers if their volume / type of music / behaviour was not actively obnoxious to them, and one could play tunes in or outside the odd cafe.

Thanks Nicholas, sounds interesting. I will definetly have a look down there - though probably not playing the fiddle. Musicwise – a kind of small, private tunes session for one night - also to meet new musicians - would be great. We will see.

www.athensinfoguide.com

This website contains a list of music venues; it gives no information about the music, but one place listed is:

Mike's Irish Bar, 6 Sinopis Street, Pyrgos Athinon, Ambelokipi, (Athens) - Tel. 210 776 797.

I don't know where Ambelokipi is (the website's map is kept illegible because they want people to buy it, not download it!).

The site invites questions about the venues, etc., so you can always try e-mailing them about the Irish Bar or anything else. You might get a reply, but I wouldn't count on it!
