Not the Floating Crowbar.

Not the Floating Crowbar.

Lovely playing by the girls, but the first tune can't be the Floating Crowbar as that is a reel (yes?) and this is a jig. So what is the jig?

Re: Not the Floating Crowbar.

Wouldn't that be why they call it 'The Flying Crowbar'?

Re: Not the Floating Crowbar.

lovely playing. I could listen to that all day. Infact, I think I will.

Re: Not the Floating Crowbar.

Sorry Kilfarboy, yes, they call it the Flying Crowbar. A nice jig, not to be found on this site or anywhere else on the interweb with that name, so I'm curious if it goes by some other name.

Llig, isn't it fantastic playing? And there seems to be an endless stream of amazingly proficient young musicians on the site, they really must be doing something right over there to achieve this.

Re: Not the Floating Crowbar.

I listened to the first tune earlier, I think I played it with Jackie Daly a few times. Isn't it 'The Blue Angel' ?

Re: Not the Floating Crowbar.

Yes, well done Kilfarboy, that's it.

AKA KIng's fancy (it says here) "Composed by the late Liam King, a piano player who lived in Belfast and Dublin".

Re: Not the Floating Crowbar.

Great tunes, and great playing; thanks for posting! These girls really give the tunes what they deserve.

Re: Not the Floating Crowbar.

The Blue Angel for certain - Buttons and Bows has an excellent recording of it matched with the Cuil Aodha jig.

Re: Not the Floating Crowbar.

That fiddle looks like it came up from a peat bog - great rhythm
and lift - no wonder it wouldn't stay down there...

Re: Not the Floating Crowbar.

This tune is also known as 'The King's Fancy' and, anywhere I have come across it, is in G minor. I have to put the key as Bb as ABC Navigator doesn't seem to recognise G minor. I play it as follows:-

X:1
T:King's Fancy / Blue Angel
M:6/8
K:Bb
Bc|:dcB BAB|GBe FBd|EGc DFB|cAF f^e_e|
dcB BA_A|GBe FBd|EGc DFB|1AGA ~B2 c:|2AGA ~B2||
c|dcB BAB|dBG BAG|A^FD cBA|ded cBA|dBG G^FG|
BAG dBG|1A^FD dcA|BcA GB:|2A^FD d/e/=fe|ded cAF||

Re: Not the Floating Crowbar.

Why do cameramen insist on doing their best not to show the instrument being played?
Keep one side of the concertina in darkness and show as little fingering as possible, concentrating as much as possible on the faces of the players.
Thank God the players sat down and we weren't forced to suffer hair-tossing and swooping instruments like some culprits featured elsewhere on the Session.
Nice set to listen to and super playing, nevertheless.

Re: Not the Floating Crowbar.

The floating crowbar is a reel and its proper name is the rathcroghan reel, a Co Roscommon tune

Re: Not the Floating Crowbar.

Is the first tune really King's Fancy? It is certainly similar to the King's Fancy notated here on the Session, but I would say different enough to be a different (and better) tune.
