practice pipes

how do'
I have an opportunity to learn the uilleann pipes with a regular teacher starting next month. Sort of too good to be true , but is.

I want to have a go anyway. I need a set of practice pipes - does anyone know if you can hire them ??? (Belfast Area) or if you can get a sort of practice chanter that you blow sort of thing (you see them for the bagpipes).
Tanks.

Re: practice pipes

No working mouth blown practice chanter exists. You'll need bag, bellows and a proper chanter.

Re: practice pipes

John McSherry started a new Belfast Piper's Club several months ago. He posted about here: http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/17783

NPU (the Dublin Piper's club) has practice sets people can borrow but I don't know if the Belfast Club does. Probably not as most clubs won't but it is worth an enquiry anyway.

Failing that, you can get a David Daye practice set in about six months. Or that was the wait list when I last heard but not sure what it is now. I've played them and they're not half bad. http://www.daye1.com/pennychanter.html

Pat Sky also makes a budget set. The wait list for a practice set is about two months. http://www.patricksky.com/Pipes%20prices-5.htm

Lastly there is Uilleann Pipeworks of Boston. They seem to have closed their wait list and are now just selling them on a set-by-set basis. Who knows how long it would take to get one, but they're decent instruments for the money. http://www.patricksky.com/Pipes%20prices-5.htm

Re: practice pipes

BTW, all of those makers are in the United States. I don't know if anyone in the UK or Ireland is making budget sets of pipes. I have not run into in my travels. Anyone else know?

Re: practice pipes

Davy Stephenson in the UK does special "student sets" for sale and loan:

He is a great maker and learned from the esteemed Peter Hunter.
