I have had a little Hohner accordion for many years, I got it from a junk shop. It has 24 basses and a very dry sound. Over the years several people have said "I don't usually like the accordion, but I like that", and it is the dry sound they are talking about. I also like its extremely light weight and small dimensions, and I find that 24 basses (including minors) provides enough harmonic sophistication for anything I play.
A friend has borrowed the box, and now she is looking for something similar, so I am wondering if anything like that is available. From what I read on the web, I'm not the only one who finds this is a good instrument for ITM.
Does it have one set of reeds? I have an old beginner's accordion, short keyboard and only 12 basses that has only a single set of reeds, and has a sound more like a concertina, albeit pitched lower. It is a nice sound, although the bellows are pretty well shot, and many of the basses wheeze. Before I got my button box, I searched for a similar instrument in better condition, or someone that still makes them, but failed.
If anyone knows a source for this type of instrument, new or used, please let us know.
when they get wet they get cranky. I also have a small student model with 12 bass that sounds right for trad stuff, from the early 50's I think. Have you searched on e-bay?
i have the king-sized professional model with 13 basses if you count the air button. I still need to find out where it plugs in at. I have only the adaptor for a 3 prong. Came with a lot of music books, but I dont think it's irish songs so I just leave them in the case.

I do know a small dry piano accordion player. I'll give him a ring.
