The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

This is a bit of tune ID question in reverse...

I've been enjoying the daily Clare fm podcasts, which have pointed me towards many great new musicians, albums and tunes. My only problem is that when they announce the names of the performers and tunes, a combination of muffled sound quality and my own difficulty with the announcers' accents means I sometimes get a very garbled version of what they actually said. Sometimes I can work it out, but this one has me flummoxed:

Aired on a Friday show two weeks ago. Lovely flute with piano backing, playing two lively reels. As best as I can make out, the tunes played are:

"Major Barns" and "The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin"
and the artist is, um, "Callum MacEreffumaffum". The album is "The Home Ruler".

Now, I know that probably isn't right... Does anyone have a guess as to what/who this might actually be? Or suggest a way I might find out?

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

Check out the last track of:
http://www.thesession.org/recordings/display/2984
Catherine McEvoy's new album. I found it by looking at all the solo flute albums I recognized that were posted here in the last 10 weeks, but searching the Recordings section for "Home Ruler" is much faster.

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

The nut puffin is still a mystery.

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

That must be it! I hadn't thought of searching "home ruler", apparently the only part of the ID that I had right.

No clue about the nut puffin... the announcer must have been starting to say something else. I wonder if "MacEreffumaffum" is "McEvoy's new album"

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

OK, here's another one, since you got that one so quickly:

Maggie on the Shore/Cockle McCockle
by Danny Miehen.

reels, fiddle and guitar.

Apparently I heard the Maggie on the Shore part right, but this doesn't appear to be either of the two recordings listed for that reel.

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

OK actually I've got another one:

Ashley McPhillips
Jackson's Rolling Jig/Jackson's Couch in the Morning
jigs.

solo flute for most of it, then a harp joining in the last bit.

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

What a laugh, but it looks like this could go on forever. I'd better get out of here before I get roped in too. Good luck Gary...

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

There's a few more garbled tune names that I've jotted down, but I think this latest one is the last true mystery. All of the others have at least one tune name or artist name I recognise and can use to fill in the rest.

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

OMG im still laughing over here!

Well there should be a reel called "The Mystery of the Nut Puffin" !!

I think I Shall write it an use the pen name

Callum MacEreffumaffum!!!

:D

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

You've named two tunes, but flute and harp, sorry, someone else will have to find the musicians and recording in question, but the tune names are ~

Jackson's Rolling Jig / Port Cornad Mic Seoin ~ O'Neill

Jackson's Couge In The Morning / Jackson's Couge / Jackson's Coagy

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

Ah-ha, thanks a bunch, Ceolachan!

@greybeardd: When my hearing is at its worst, my friends tend to be pretty amused. The other day I perked up when I thought I heard a guy mention that his job during university was as a farmer, and I started asking him about what sort of crops he grew. I got a chorus of strange looks from everyone at the table... turns out he'd said he was a barman.

Other artists I have yet to track down are "Jack Tattie", "Angus Grackle", "Fergle Features", and "Jerry Fiddle O'Connor"

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

I believe I've solved the mystery.

The Clare radio programme was "Wheels of the World with Pat Costello", broadcast Friday 18th July 2008. As it happens, I downloaded it as a podcast on iTunes, so I've been able to
listen to it again.

The flute playing starts at 1 hour 44 minutes into the program. I've applied the usual advanced audio forensics (ahem!), and this is my transcription of what Pat Costello says when the flute playing finishes:

"Ah, that's really great flute playing from Catherine McEvoy, from her album entitled The Home Ruler - we'll dedicate that specially to Mr Sarcosi who is coming to visit us in the next couple of days. The two tunes - Major Moran's and the Mystery Reel, and I'm not cutting Catherine short or anything like that, but I have to go [indistinct rapidly spoken word or words] to Des. Des, what is the news, pray tell us?" Des then comes in with a sports report.

So "in a nut puffin" was in fact "and I'm not cutting".

The "Mystery Reel" played by Catherine McEvoy is the same as the "Mystery Reel" played by Frankie Gavin on Track 7 of his album "Fierce Traditional". I remember reading the slieve notes of that CD, and reading between the lines I had the feeling that there was the suggestion or hint that FG had composed that tune. Does anyone know the truth of the matter?

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

oops! "sleeve" - not "slieve" (it could've been worse - like "sliabh"!)

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

The ClareFm broadcasters are notorious for having inconsistent volume levels. Joan seems to have improved since I first started listening. Pat C is way too quiet, and he's got a rather soft voice. When I listen in my car, I have to turn the volume up for him, and back down for the tunes.

The good thing about Pat's show is that he usually edits out the commercials.

After close to two years listening, I've come to understand most of what they are saying, even the Irish names. It just takes time and patience. I'm even starting to learn a few words and short phrases in Irish.

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

lazyhound, I think you've solved it! I do remember pieces of the bit you transcribed, although my version has many more [indistinct words] patches than yours.

awildman: i know, i'm having quite a struggle with it, even with the volume turned up. Some of the music is so good though that I'd forgive almost anything. I've had similar problems writing down tune names in my notebook during sessions. Had some trouble finding "Crack on a Stick" (turned out to be Blackthorn Stick).

Meanwhile, I've figured out through the album name that "Angus Grackle" is really "Edna Scahill, and "Fergle Features" is Fergal Scahill (I was way off on the last name).

Currently working on identifying a reel that Tommy Peoples plays with Donegal Reel/Black Path. It's either "Patchwork Fields" or "Paddy McKeel's" or something like that...

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

Perhaps if you told us which broadcast, and the time of the names were mentioned......Specifics are always helpful.

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

Sure, next time I run into one that I can't figure out myself, I'll make sure to do that.

If the take you've been listening is any different, why not try transcribing it and adding it in the 'comments'? The ears are always the preferred avenue of acquisition, but maybe the transcription will help you to make some sense of it, or even give you some other options...

We have a friend who can't hear anything out one side of his head, and out the other it often gets garbled. We have been trying to get him to get and use a hearing aid, but he is too damned stubborn. Worse, he sometimes ends up in situations where being able to hear what's being said is important ~ as a result it isn't just a problem of what he hears but also what he does and where he goes with it... ;-)

It's Enda Scahill brief bio:

I must say I greatly enjoy his playing with Paul Brock, et al.

Re: The Mystery Reel in a Nut Puffin

Thanks for submitting that one, ceolachan! I hadn't managed to learn any of the mystery tunes yet, or I would have attempted to find them via ABC.

@curamach: isn't it wonderful? Added to my list of recordings to watch out for. They've also been playing some recordings that have further deepened my awe of Tommy Peoples.
