need a good little ABC editor

need a good little ABC editor

I use Barfly on my mac at home but I'd like an editor I can use on the PC at work. You know, to transcribe things on my lunch break. or to jot down thins that come to me. Or just to relieve the crushing boredom that is my job.
I'd like to find a nice, very small ABC editor that will show the staff in real time and ability to play the midis. Don't need anything more fancy than that. And again.. the smaller the file size the better, so i can hide it . Any suggestions?
Thanx!

Re: need a good little ABC editor

I use ABC navigator. It won't give you pretty output for printing, but it's great for keeping your tunes in order. I use abc2ps when I want to print something, but then I'm a geek...

I use ABC2Win.. it does all you mentioned and has good printing output.

Re: need a good little ABC editor

Question for you Barfly users.

When playing various tunes in Barfly, it seems I have to turn up the tempo to at times to 300 BPM or more to get what sounds like the correct speed(The Kesh Jig for example). If unchanged and I play Morrison's it sounds like a chipmunks version.

Any idea what's going on?

Re: need a good little ABC editor

Isn't the latest barfly carbonized? It's a non-native app on PC and there might be bugs but it should work. I've heard great things about ABC2Win FWIW (and not much). I'm mac-based.

Fishmonger, check the note lengeh, the

L:

in the header. If it's set to 1/4 it could read the file differently. You can delete this line entirely and the file will still play. It just reverts to the default length of 1/8th notes. Hope that helps...

Re: need a good little ABC editor

fidkid, thanks for the help. But L:1/8 in my file. Oh and I'm on a Mac (G4 w/1G of ram) at the moment. My PC took a dump on me. It won't even start-up.

I'm learning this tune at 225 BPM. Sounds fast but it ain't. Sounds like a sleepy ol tune. Full speed would be about 300-325.

Re: need a good little ABC editor

ABC2WIN won't show your edits in real time as you go. For a one-stop-shop on PC you need either ABCNavigator or ABCexplorer. I prefer ABCexplorer as it's got (amongst other things) a help file in English (proprietorial grin) and is actively being developed. One of those two. All the rest require a certain amount of technical involvement to achieve satisfactory functionality.

Re: need a good little ABC editor

Oh Fishmonger et al.....!!

In Barfly (and in all ABC parlance) you can set an absolute tempo...

Go to player prefs.... select "beats per minute"

Then in your "Q" field
type

Q:(y)=(X)
where y is the note beat value (independent of the "L:" ) and x is the beats per minute

eg... Q:1/4=120 or Q:1/4=90 or Q:1/8=240

like a metronome setting

this will be printed on the sheetmusic too as a metronome setting like on real sheetmusic.

simple

Anyway... Thanks to you all for your suggetions for a PC/Windoze ABC app.
I appreciate it!
Thanx

Re: need a good little ABC editor

In Barfly, if you set the tune type with the R: field, the playback macros can usually pick a pretty good tempo. e.g.,

e.g.

T:Se\'an Reid's Reel
T:Also known as "Gilbert Clancy's"
C:From ComhaltasLive Programme #266
R:Reel
M:C|
L:1/8

Re: need a good little ABC editor

ABC Navigator is fabulous, and it prints clearly on both my HP inkjet and Brother laser. The staff lines are a bit light on the Brother unless I choose the PostScript driver. My only complaint is that it won't print the lyrics. And it won't transpose or add chords (okay, so three minor complaints). I do all the music for our little medieval/celtic/sea shanty band so I use it a lot.

ABC Editor will print the lyrics, add chords and transpose, but is really clunky to use compared to Navigator.

After reading comments in this discussion I'll try ABC Explorer soon.
