Re: Clare Musicians

Cheers. Thanks to modern technology, now I can watch Clare musicians playing an East Galway tune while sweating buckets in my small room in Japan.

Re: Clare Musicians

The clip actually reminds me of the duet playing of Mary MacNamara and Martin Hayes, who were probably still in their teens: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TABSf0AcdVQ

Re: Clare Musicians

Is Joan Hanrahan any relation to Kieran Hanrahan?

# Posted on August 2nd 2008 by PaddyCmusic

Re: Clare Musicians

I doubt it as Joan is from Lisseycasey (about 10 miles from Ennis) while Kieran's family all live in Ennis and I've never heard of any connection in the 15 years or so I've been in Clare. Maybe someone who's not a "blow in" to the county will give you a more authorative answer!

Re: Clare Musicians

Gorgeous. I'll have their "Miss Monaghan" stuck in my head all day now.

Re: Clare Musicians

Thanks concertinaplayer. Superb. I received Dympna's cd yesterday afternoon and I'm a fan now. By the way, why can't Comhaltas get her name right? Or is there an alternative spelling ? I've seen her name spelled with an H before. Contamination from nymphet ? (heaven forbid!).

Re: Clare Musicians

To me this is what the tradition is about, a subject recently raised by ceolachan on the "When my mind is attentive but the feet don't move" thread. It's hard to describe it, but you know it when you hear it!

Re: Clare Musicians

Bannerman, I agree. Good solid playing. And this pair just has 'it.' I've heard Joan before a bit, and I like her playing.

Funny how many of he Comhaltas players don't have 'it.' The players who are normally outside the Comhaltas sphere seem to get it. I'm not saying that Comhaltas sucks the life out of the music, but why don't I feel anything many times?

Re: Clare Musicians

"Funny how many of he Comhaltas players don't have 'it." - I'm at a bit of a loss as to who these Comhaltas players are. Is it somebody who has taken part in a Fleadh Cheoil? If so, then most musicians would have been guilty of this at some time in their career. Maybe it's people who contribute to Comhaltaslive but then this includes a very wide range of players of all ages. Nothing personal awildman2384, but as a long-standing Comhaltas member (more than thirty years now) I must register a protest at this continual assertion that musicians with Comhaltas connections are not quite up to the mark.

Re: Clare Musicians

it is so lovely. this entire installment is nifty, love that jack talty concertina clip as well but.....when i was teetering on the verge of starting concertina, mary macnamara's music and seeing kitty hayes and gerald haugh in gleesons were probably what put me over the brink, but at clancy week just about five minutes before i actually got started i remember that dympna o'sullivan, both at the concertina recital and playing in hillerys, was the dream sound to me of the music as expressed on concertina......it was almost a feeling of recognition..... this clip brings it all back....

Re: Clare Musicians

Sorry, Bannerman, didn't mean to offend. What I should have said is that many of the vids I see on the Comhaltas website just don't do much for me. I merely assumed that most of the players were strongly associated with Comhaltas. (Many of the vids do specify which branch the players are from). Perhaps it's just the youth of the players. I wasn't trying to assert anything, merely asking why many vids don't do much for me. Maybe it's just because something gets lost on video? Maybe it's just a playing style preference thing? Maybe I would change my mind if I heard them in person. Maybe in 30 years when I can afford such a trip.

By the way, I never said anything negative about Comhaltas, nor do I think anything negative about them. I have a bad habit of typing things the wrong way. Again, my apologies.

Re: Clare Musicians

Its often understated how much of an effect a camera can have on musicians. Or even just recording equipment in general. Maybe thats why.

Re: Clare Musicians

No need to apologise awildman. I know exactly where you're coming from now - it's always a problem with communications in Cyberspace in trying to get one's message across and I may have been guilty of this too in my rant about the Comhaltas thing. You're right in that most of these musicians will sound much more relaxed off-camera and I think Paddy hit the nail on the head here. Mind you there are some exceptions where musicians are not fazed by the technology and I'm listing a couple below which I think fall into this category - I hope you enjoy them.

Re: Clare Musicians

Two very good examples Bannerman.

Re: Clare Musicians

Both clips are definitely enjoyable. I have the second one bookmarked (and the audio downloaded) and have listened to it probably a hundred times. Micheal and Danny really get into a groove, don't they?

Re: Clare Musicians

That first video of the street session in Tullamore included 4 banjos and a guitar.
To judge by some of the stuff you read here about banjos and guitars, that should have been a recipe for disaster.
Just goes to show, yet again, that it´s the player, not the instrument that counts.
In any case, with first class musicians like Mick O´Connor and Tony O´Rourke you´re bound to have a great session, even if they´d been playing a tea chest double bass !

Re: Clare Musicians

Agreed.
Also goes to show, pick and choose what to take from the posts here..
