Re: trouble playing midi files??

Click on the Volume icon on the toolbar at the bottom of your Windows screen. The Play Control window should show.
Look at the MIDI control slider. It will either be muted or the slider will be at zero, so make the obvious correction and everything should be ok.
The MIDI control zeroing itself for no apparent reason is a known problem (or feature!) so always check it before playing back MIDI files.

Re: trouble playing midi files??

With Firefox you should be able to choose open with Windows Media Player. If that does not work try to save the midi & opening the file with your default player.
If it is just a volume issue lazyhound already has that covered.

Re: trouble playing midi files??

Is it a "genuine" windows system you have? Everytime the media player updates, if it is a dodgy system it causes havoc.

Or so I have been told.

Re: trouble playing midi files??

I usually prefer to 'right click' and 'save as'. Can then use my player of choice - Quicktime -- or Windows media player-- with 'proper' full control over playing --- including slowing down -- if I'm trying to play along / learn the tune (or sometimes even speeding up --- if a particularly slow midi file -- e.g. -intended for easy learning)
As llig leachim hints at -- midi files are generally pretty dreadful as 'music' --- but do give a hint what the notes are --- if learning by ear -- and its a reasonably accurate midi file to start with.

Re: trouble playing midi files??

Oh yes, and when using a mac - I tend to use this Wheatstone concertina 'sound font'. At least a bit more appropriate than most midi default sounds

Don't expect your midi files to start sounding as though played by Mícheál Ó Raghallaígh though !

Re: trouble playing midi files??

Like Col said, I'd definitely just save the midi file and then you can use your player of choice (I've an older version of Cakewalk, amongst other things). Personally, I find the Windows Media Player more of a hindrance than a help. I might try the concertina thing on my PC, thanks, Col!

Tom
I'd be interested to know if that sound font works in Windows. I understand Macs more -- and would'nt quite know where to put it / how to install to be a default midi sound in windows.

Re: trouble playing midi files??

I'm happy to say that in all my years on macs, I've never once come accross, nor looked for, the "Wheatstone concertina 'sound font'"

Re: trouble playing midi files??

Ok, Col, I'll give it a shot and let you know.

Re: trouble playing midi files??

Even if you don't have a mac midi can be manipulated. There are more instrument patches than the piano. A good sound card also improves the sound. But without a doubt Phil Taylor has a nice SoundFont.
