Scotland, Sessions, September and Golf

Scotland, Sessions, September and Golf

I've never been to Scotland, but I'm going! I'll be there (Fife) the month of September and definitely plan on playing golf at St. Andrews. I'll want to hit the sessions as well.

Anyone want to play some golf and tunes with me while I'm there???

I'd try posting at footstompin.com if I were you.

Re: Scotland, Sessions, September and Golf

I believe there is a session somewhere in St Andrews. Never been along to it though.

If you would care to make a trip over the bridge to Dundee (not that far) or down to Edinburgh then there is music there to satisfy the most trad-hungry monster. :-)

If you find yourself looking for tunes then contact myself or TheSilverSpear on here and we will make sure there is something on.

Hope you have fun on the courses.

Re: Scotland, Sessions, September and Golf

I go every week to the St Andrews session, although I'll be gone by the time you get there. The session is Tuesday nights starting at 9pm at Aitkmans/Cellar Bar (downstairs) on Bell Street. They are occasionally known to play on Sundays at the Whey Pat. Definitely bring your instrument and drop by! I'm sorry I won't get a chance to meet you, but the folks who do come regularly are the friendliest bunch you could ever hope for. They're very beginner-friendly, yet there are some very fine musicians among the regulars. It's mostly Scottish/Irish music that gets played, but the occasional ragtime or Appalachian tune is not unheard of - certainly nobody would turn up their nose at a banjo. The only caveat is that attendance can be somewhat erratic, especially before St Andrews termtime starts in October. One week there may be only two or three others, another there may be twelve musicians, and maybe three times over the past year I've been the only one to show up.

There is also a very fine session on Thursday nights at the Fisherman's Arms in Broughty Ferry near Dundee. That's probably the most well-known session over in this area. I'm not a regular there, but the one time I did go there was excellent craic and some superb playing. If you're not staying in Broughty Ferry or hiring a car, you'll have to be careful of when the last bus back to St Andrews leaves.

Feel free to drop me a message with any questions and if nothing else I can put you in touch with people who know more about the scene here than me.
