Ran across this video on YouTube. I had never heard of them before, but I really liked the playing on this live clip. I checked a few other sets by them and was unimpressed, but for some reason thought the playing was top-notch here. Anyone know the name of the first reel? It sounds so familiar, but I don't think I've played it before.
Don't know the reel, but they used to play in Fort Myers, FL every other week or so. One of the Dwyer's scions was quite smitten with one of the Orphans and would fly them down to perform quite often. Talk about an expensive date.
Anyway, Dwyer's Pub decided to change from an upscale Irish pub to a steakhouse, then they closed because no one came. Now this gorgeous building that looks like a castle with two floors is sitting there, doing nothing.
...and that's all the Orphans/Dwyer's/Florida gossip I have. Fresh out.
What an off-topic ramble. Good luck with your reel, Stephen, that's a sharp one.
Although I don't play Bonnie Kate, that would be a natural guess that somehow eluded me at the time. Bonnie Kate and Jenny's Chickens I believe are a classic Sligo pairing.
I was just checking out youtube for jenny's chicken and found this little gem... "why did jenny's chicken cross the road?"
I imediately added it to my favourites..
Sorry, I don't think they're a great band. Tunes are nice, but that was courtesy of Michael Coleman. The fiddler isn't too bad but its very hard to hear her behind the awfully loud guitar player, piano accordionist and the bodhran player.
Agreed, never said they were, and also, this is quite unusual for them. I seem to recall them doing a Celtic Rock crossover thing for the Friday and Saturday night American drinking crowd.
I thought the video of Corwin Zekley playing "Jenny's Chickens" was a fowl but funny and amusing video.
My wife thought it was funny also but she told me that if I was going to say it was "fowl", I was on my own there.
I don't know session savage since I am probably beyond professional help (as in psychiatric help).
On the other hand, though, it might be my wife who needs the professional help because she is so deluded that she actually thinks has has found one of these good men who supposedly are so hard to find and, also, she thinks I am handsome.
I 100% agree with Pere. Miguel ('sligofiddler' from Youtube) always makes me smile when I hear him playing. Such a sweet player. Great swing and not overdone.

I need more coffee, I have Kevin Burke doing those two as a set on a solo CD. [scratches head, rubs eyes]

Re: Screaming Orphans
That lad has the proper sense of humor needed for the music, no doubt, but what happens when Jenny finds out he's got her chicken?
