I've just tried the telephone number for you, Ceol, and it's dead.

Another shop bites the dust, though I hope I'm wrong.

Pity if it's true as The Living Tradition always offered a good level of service whenever I purchased from them.

Yes, well, it isn't the kind of discussion I'm known for, but it did get me worrying. One of the things I valued in this shop was that they seemed to try to stock recodings by musicians that were only producing in limited numbers. They offered a foothold for such things...

Thanks Floss, very much appreciated, but also increasing my worry... We always made a point to visit the shop when in Cork to look and wish, and we always left with some treasures for the ears, heart and mind in hand...

Ceol,

I'd be sad too if the shop had gone, but it won't be the first in the last few months. The recession here is really beginning to bite hard. Today's 'Sunday Tribune' ran an article today about how even some of the major names in Dublin retailing have been reduced to attempting to sell off most of their stock at 70% (or more) discounts and made the somewhat startling claim that Grafton Street is astonishingly quiet.

Band-In-A-Box

Just got a copy of Band-In-A-Box and I am feeling my way around it. I have discovered that it uses templates and the program includes many templates for the lokes of Country music, Gospel, Pop, etc., but no Irish. Does anyone know where I can get B-I-A-B reel, jig, etc.,templates or how can I make my own.

Thanks.

c, I spoke to them a few weeks ago when buying a CD; turned out I'd rung the day before they were closing the shop, but he did say he was keeping the mail order side going. Sounds ominous if the website isn't working though.

a sad day indeed - gone the same route as Kenny's in Galway by the sounds of things

Kenny's in Galway! It was the best place as a bookshop and a gallery too.

By the way, does anyone know what has happened to Mulligan Records in Galway? http://www.mulligan.ie; http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/ireland/galway/shopping/1000680479
Hope they are still open.

Here are substitutes:

I have purchased a few CDs from CDWorld.ie, and had no problem with them so far.

Re: The Living Tradition ~ Cork ~ Now you see it, now you don't!?

I too notice the Living tradition had gone off-line. The business changed hands last year didn't it?

Mulligan's is reported to have folded but Kenny's Gallery is still there although their book department is on-line only. It is a shame but in fairness it makes sense as the main part of their business was on-line as it was.

Custy's will still get you almost any CD and as I said before, they are definitely and by far the fairest in their payments to those of us who produce CDs independently, and that should count for something.

Good point kilfarboy, about Custy's, another good source for recordings and online content too, and a place we'd always visit when in or passing through Ennis ~ the corridor of a shop with the classes through the back door... Suck that gut in, someone's passing... ;-)

Custy's Traditional Music Shop

Yes, I had meant to note that too ~ about Mulligan Records, down again... :-/

Looking at the lovely artwork on their website it looks like they've expanded since last we were there?! So, no longer as intimate...

Custy's moved to a slightly bigger shop a few years ago, you may have missed that too.

Re: The Living Tradition ~ Cork ~ Now you see it, now you don't!?

just slightly bigger!! - it's not some sort of trad. warehouse shopping mall. Just a typical small town shop in Ennis.

Well, they gained a lot of space for their classes which are no longer in the box room in the back but have ample space upstairs. It may have changed now but years back the classes were what kept them in business during the winter so the move was an important improvement.

Brilliant, at least someone is finding success, may they continue to be blessed...

You're right Kilfarboy, missed again. The last few times we were over we kept ourselves in the SW and never crossed over the Clare border... We'll have to remedy that next time, I want to see what the new teaching areas look like... ;-)

Re: The Living Tradition ~ Cork ~ Now you see it, now you don't!?

Really sorry to report but Mulligans in Galway, Synnotts in Waterford and The Living Tradition in Cork have all closed down this year. There's a fourth but I can't remember which.

Not looking good, is it? :-(

Re: The Living Tradition ~ Cork ~ Now you see it, now you don't!?

Are Crehan's in Drumcondra still going? - there was some talk last year that they might close.

But why? - with a healthy number of people playing and listening to trad. in Ireland. Is it that people tend to source their instruments differently now - go direct to the makers of which there are more. For CD sales - is it all mostly web based, even for trad.?

We still have two outlets in Wexford that deal at least partly in trad - Clokes (I think he's called) in Enniscorthy and Minstrel Music in Wexford town. Both have a selection of keyboards and guitars etc. but also a good selection of trad. instruments and paraphenalia.

Re: The Living Tradition ~ Cork ~ Now you see it, now you don't!?

Just a few months ago, looking for a new microphone, I arrived at an old haunt to find the doors and windows barred ~ discovering this large chain had folded, SoundControl. They used to call themselves "The U.K.'s largest Online Music Store"... They didn't specialize in any way in Irish, but stocked a good selection of acoustic instruments along with all the plug in stuff... Oddly, they gave online sales, competition there, as the reason for their demise...

Four trad shops closing is a hell of a lot bigger concern to me, but I do miss making my regular visits to that shop that was just down the road from here, mostly for small things, and to give new kit a try, but also including purchasing things for Christmas, like percussion kit for our nephew... Small shops are also very much about the folks that start them and keep them going. Sometimes that alone can bring a shop to an end, when the proprietor has had enough of it all. Having worked a small shop ourselves we know it is a hell of a lot of work. We still have family in the business, specializing in Welsh goods in general, including books and recordings... It's tough work...

Re: The Living Tradition ~ Cork ~ Now you see it, now you don't!?

Anyone fearing that the condition of Irish record stores was terminal will be gratified to know that the deservedly legendary Good Vibrations shop will be reopening in Belfast's Winetavern Street this Saturday after a 16-year absence - see http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/entertainment/music/news/good-vibrations-belfast-music-store-is-back-in-business-13918100.html.

Though the store was always associated with the Norn Iron punk movement, it usually had a very good stock of traditional and folk music too and prices were generally very reasonable.

For anyone planning a visit to Belfast, Winetavern Street is tucked away behind the Castlecourt Shopping Centre at the northern end of Royal Avenue or can be accessed via Millfield or North Street.
