what is the tension.

what is the tension.

If you put mandolin strings on a mandola, and tune it a whole step under madolin tuning, and put a capo on the second fret, what is the tension? Will it hurt the neck?

Re: what is the tension.

Well, I'd still try out capoing up higher with the proper strings, at least once so you can compare the tone you get (or trading in your lovely mandola for a mandolin...). Anyway, you can determine the tension of proper mandola strings on your mandola by checking the tension data on mandola strings at juststrings.com. There is also a website that has a strnig tension calculator, but I don't have URL handy right now; I'll look for it though. You might find it by googling it. This will allow you to compare the tension of your proposed set up with what your instrument was intended for. Don't forget to wear safety glasses when you tighten those mandolin strings up...

Re: what is the tension.

Thanks Mr. Keith. You have been a most wonderful help. I'll look for your name on further mandolin/mandola questions.

Re: what is the tension.

What is the scale length of an instrument? Like a mandolin....... From what to what?

Re: what is the tension.

mandolincafe.com is really the place to go read up on these things. You can search past discussion threads, or start a new one. The scale length is the length of the open string that is free to vibrate, from the nut to the bridge.
