Ormiston flutes

Ormiston flutes

Hi,
I am thinking of buying an Ormiston flute and just wanted to hear what people think about them. I have been playing Irish music for about 6 years on a metal flute and think it's about time to make a change.
Thanks,
Ayliffe

Re: Ormiston flutes

They are great flutes. Once I can afford one it is an Ormiston I would choose to get. They are very popular around Scotland and are used by musicians right up to a professional standard.

Re: Ormiston flutes

Could you put some info in your profile Ayliffe? Where are you from? If you are in Scotland it should be easy enough for you to see an Ormiston in action or to have a quick shot of someone elses.

Re: Ormiston flutes

I bought one of George Ormiston's new blackwood keyless D flutes last year and love it with a passion - it's very responsive, very powerful at the bottom and sweet higher up and easy to blow. I did play on one of his older flutes a few months back, though, and that didn't suit me at all, so do try a few out if you get the chance.

Changing the subject slightly, my husband has just bought me one of George's new blackwood high D whistles and it is gorgeous - a real treat to play after my old battered Feadog.

Re: Ormiston flutes

I have an 8-key Ormiston flute, - fully chromatic, sterling silver keys and ferrules, custom-made all-wood headjoint - and I love it. It has a huge dynamic range from a whisper to a blast, and is in perfect tune. I've had it for five or six years and played it a lot in my dance band and in informal sessions. Alas, I'm getting arthritic and am finding it is getting too heavy for my left hand, so am about to sell it. I logged onto the Session today to see how to go about selling it in fact. So f you are interested, do get in touch - it's not cheap, but I will sell it for a very fair price to a good home. It's in perfect playing condition in a handsome box. I can be emailed at daphne.briggs@arch.ox.ac.uk
